Upgrading an old build

Hi All,

I am after a bit of advice regarding upgrading my aging kit. I have an old LGA 775 build that I have only really upgraded the GFX card and gone ssd in the last 3 years on it. It has lasted me but I do find the fps slow on games etc now.

I do a mix of things on it but mainly some gaming and watching movies etc and the occasional video encoding. I am looking to replace the cpu / mb and memory + anything else that might be needed and spend around £500 - £600.

Looking around the forum for suggestions I have come up with the following so far :-

Intel Core i7-4770K 3.50GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £245.99

I already have HIS HD 7950 IceQ BOOST GFX and Cooler Master Real Power M850 PSU so I should be ok there. I guess I need a decent cpu cooler as I assume my old Noctua NH-U12P will not work with the cpu above, any recommendations?

Any thoughts on the above, anything worth changing for something else?

Looks good, but how often are you going to be video encoding? Probably don't need 16GB RAM all that much. I also have that motherboard and it's very good :) Btw at some suppliers that motherboard is coming with a free £45 mouse which I just sold :) . Hyper 212 Evo cooler would do nicely - how much do you want to spend on the cooler?
 
Thanks for coming back so quick shivy. Not that often on the video encoding, it is mainly camcorder stuff from family events etc. Do you reckon it is better to get some faster 8gb only memory instead?

Yes the one on overclockers comes with the free mouse, I just didn't paste in the full description :)

Don't mind on the cooler cost if it comes in the overall budget, you thinking of one of the water cooler ones?
 
Nice one Idleman, I will check that out and see how long they take to send it out and see if I can last.

@ Lee - I have the non SE2 version so at least according to the link it will not work unless I upgrade it with that kit
 
No it won't work, had the same problem with my old Freezer Pro 7 - thought it would fit from a 775 socket to 1150 but it turned out not to be :(
 
CPU cooler will be fine with a new bracket.

As for CPU, do you need an i7? Would an i5 or even a cheaper AMD alternative not do? You state gaming, movies and occasional video editing, and with that cooler I guess not a huge overclocker or benchmark chaser?

Even an AMD 6300 with an Asus Sabertooth motherboard would be a nice upgrade over a 775 system.

Yes you are correct, I only overclock within safe limits and dont benchmark chase. The main reason for me going for that processor was to future proof as much as possible as well (even though I know these things are out of date immediately) + it fell within my budget.

I am curious on your memory choice though, you have selected one with better timings on it, am I likely to see that much of a performance gain on the I selected?
 
I would ignore what sastusbulbas wrote above becuase, well i don't agree..

I think what you had selected (in your opening post) is NEARLY perfect.

The problem is the RAM. Using 4 sticks will mean the cooler WILL go over one stick of RAM. And it won't fit.

The cooler offers 40mm of clearance as shown here:

While the RAM is 52mm tall, as shown here:

And alternative is use smaller RAM.

Yes I will go with 8gb instead, can always add 8 at a later date if needed.

As I am going for 8, should I be getting better ram or am I not going to notice? I see in the memory forum a lot are recommending the orange version http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-041-TG&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=2429 but they are out of stock currently :(

Hehe thanks both, trigger pulled and all ordered for £459 Bargain as you said :)

The only minor bad news is it looks like I wont get the kit for my cooler until mid Jan so will have to use the stock fan for a while, ah well.
