I'm slightly upgrading an ancient 2005 pc (AMD Presario SR1539UK) just until i can afford to get a new system :)

System Spec.

I plan to get an Athlon 64 x2 4800+ dual core processor (as that is the max the motherboard can take) and double the memory to 2gb. I was also hoping to upgrade the gpu to something similar to a 8500 gt.

Will the original 300watt psu still be able to cope with this? and do you think i should just not bother as it is a dying cause? :P
Help greatly appreciated!

What do you use the system for?

Upgrading the cpu to a 4800+ will not justify the cost of the new cpu mate.

I would definitely Get 2 gig of ram (another 1 gig)
and a dedicated graphics card (8500gt or similar)

Will give the system a nice boost.

And a 300w psu will cut it with those upgrades :)

I just had a look, and an X2 4800+ will cost you around £40. Though this is still a lot of money for very old tech, you would be better off getting a CPU like this and a board like this. Admittedly, it costs over twice as much - but atleast the cost of the upgrade is justified (plus the cost of some DDR2 RAM).

Apologies - that £40 quote was for the AM2 X 4800+. For the s939 one (the one you will need for your PC) the cheapest I could find was on the bay and £120. IMHO not even worth considering.

Sorry for the double post.

Kennysevenfold- the pc is just used for general browsing and college work although the new gpu was going to help towards gaming as the 6200 is poor/ancient to say the least :P

So get the gpu and the memory and leave it at that until i build my new pc OR get a new mobo and processor like cmndr_andi suggests as the athlon 64 4800 just isn't worth it?

Really depends on how much you are looking to spend mate :)

I would just get a graphics card and some ram to tie you over imo :)

You go down the line of getting a new cpu/motherboard/ram you might aswell just do an overhaul on the whole system.

Yea good point. Pain in the arse that certain games once installed say that my processor is hideously out of date though! haha :P

Is a really old processor enough to destroy smooth gameplay even with a mildly good gpu and 2gb ram aha? :)

It's not worth upgrading a 939 system anymore, although you can dualcore and up to 4gb memory you are still limited to DDR1 memory and the cpus aren't clocked that high. I currently have an AthlonX2 4000, 4gb ram and an 8800gts and it is definately starting to show it's age in newer games.

Look at my sig !

This thing plays oblivion perfectly well. I haven't played more modern stuff on it though.

The upgrade from 512KB to 2 MB was the single best thing I did to improve game playability.

I have used various video cards over the years - including a 6200 following a failure of a much better card when I was very short of cash. The current one which is not the best now available (AGP) made an unbelievable difference to the gaming experience.

Depends precisely what games you want to play, and more specifically which ones you are prepared not to play. May be worth spending the cash on memory and GPU if you hate changing motherboards and reinstalling OS and apps as much as me :)

aha yeah i have played Oblivion on my pc quite well but I'm more of an FPS guy ie, i want to try and get cod 4 working :P

I will pop down to ********** store in Stockport tomorrow to find a gpu and some memory! or order it online.
The cpu doesn't seem worth it as I'm getting a new system soon-ish anyway but thanks for the ideas!

Any recommendations for the gpu?
I was thinking something similar to a 8500GT?
