I have an Asus B450 plus gaming mobo with a Ryzen 5 3600X CPU. I'm looking at upgrading to a Ryzen 9 5900X. Would there be much difference in performance between the 9 and say, a 7 5800X? The 7 being a good bit cheaper.
What do you do with the PC? If you're gaming then you'd be better off with a 5800X3D, but if you're doing productivity work that uses all the cores effectively, then yes, there's a big difference between the 5900X and the 5800X.

Not much of a gamer so probably the 5900X then. Just checked on Amazon and the i7 is £349 and the i9 is £333. Asus's CPU support says the BIOS for the i9 is 2409, my current for my i5 is 3802. Will this allow the i9 to run or do I ned to flash the BIOS first?

Yeah, the 5900X is generally the best choice for productivity/workstation use when they're the same price, but you do need to be doing something that uses the cores properly (e.g. rendering), otherwise you might as well downgrade to a 5700X, or even a 5600 non-X (more than the 5600's 6 cores is a waste for general desktop usage).
Asus seem to number their BIOS as higher is better? (That's my impression from the list, but best to check yourself) So, my assumption would be that you're currently on the latest BIOS and already have support for Zen 3 (& even the X3D).
Thanks for that. Yes the X3D is listed. However, the Ryzen 7 5700X is considerably cheaper so i think I may go with that. Not sure what cooler I have, would I need to check, or how would I check if it will be OK with the 7?
Yeah, there's no risk, it'll just be hot and/or loud. It's probably equivalent to what the 5700X would come with, if AMD had chosen to include a cooler.
