Hey guys

we've got a really unstable thomson tg585 v7 router here that loves to reset it self and lose the custom settings which is really annoying, all the router does is connect 4 Pc's to network and expose a NAS log-in page externally and that's it and once its set up it does the job fine, but it fails A LOT and loses the custom settings(wat) which means re-setting it all up again

the question I have guys is have any of you have ditched the stock BE* router and upgraded to something else? and if so what would you recommend to do the job?

now I'm not aware of Be* using a custom firmware on those routers so I guess picking a stock router, connecting up would do the job?! or is there a case of picking a router that has Be* available on it?

Thanks.

When I was with BE before I switched to FTTC, I was using a Netgear DG834GT with DGTeam firmware, these have really good broadcom chipsets and I used to get the most/best speed out of my connection with some ISP SNR/profile tweaking, and some further tweaking on the router itself.

I've got one for sale in the MM with the GT Team Firmware. Edit, it is a
D834PN. ;)

I had the same issue, Be staff would not be frank with me and tell me that the router they supplied is ****. Just kept giving me asinine responses like set it to channel 8, update the latest firmware, set static IPs for all devices etc.

The most annoying problem I had was that the router would not tunnel internet connection to my laptop, although I could access the router login page (192.168.1.254) using that same laptop. Even though internet worked fine from the iPad and ethernet. I fixed it temporarily by rebooting the router. I would have to log into the router settings through wifi and the restart in the interface just so I can get internet through wifi. Strange.

I just came to the realisation that the technicolour router was just rubish and bought a low end aftermarket router.

I am using TD-W8960N by Tp-link. Not the greatest one but it was circa £28 and seemed good value for money since I'm migrating to fibre in 6 months and didn't want to splash out on expensive kit.

The only drawback with the tplink is that it doesn't allow you to set manual port forwarding. It seems to be able to detect which ports each software has elected to reserve for itself and then adds these onto the port forwarding. (It even manages to work out the software name and everything). Very strange.

It's an OK bit of kit. If you intend to stay with ADSL you should invest in something a little more decent. But it's perfect as a stopgap for the rest of your contract until you get fibre.

When I was with with Be* I used a Netgear router rather than the one they supplied. no problems in doing so and all the required information for setting it up to work with them was easily available online.

I would comment that you should safely put the original Be* router away as if you leave them they'll expect to get it back or they will charge you for it.

Bought a Netgear DG834GT has Broadcom chipset excellent router bought second hand for just a few pounds at auction
