So i'm thinking it's time to retire the dear old ps3. I only use it now for blurays and to watch converted mkv files. Is there anything better though out there for up to £150 that can perform better (any play native mkv)? the Sony BDPS7200 gets good reviews but will I see any noticeable difference?

Playing to a Panasonic tx-p55vt50 and occasionally an optoma 141x onto a 106" projector screen.

You wont see much difference between the 2 at all for blu -rays. People get so hung up on this, but the fact is a £150 sony isn't going to be much difference PQ wise compared to a £500 Pioneer.

I changed from a PS3 to a £300 Sony player and saw no difference at all. The BDPS will do you fine for £150. You could even save money and go for the Panasonic 370EB. A fantastic player at just £95.

That was my worry. However I'm getting a bit fed up of converting mkv to ps3 mpeg and the noise it kicks out when the heat ramps up a bit. Can the Panasonic so mkv no trouble?

From a well known review site

The deck’s DLNA functionality lets you stream content from servers on your home network. The list of playable files is healthy, encompassing video formats such as MKV, AVI, WMV, AVCHD, XviD, 3GP and MOV, plus MP3, WMA and AAC audio. On the downside, there’s no support for DivX and it wouldn’t stream hi-res FLAC and ALAC files from our server over a network. To play these, we had to load them onto a USB stick (which also allows you to play DSD files).

Buy a PS4 tbh that way you can play latest gen games as well as blu rays.

PS4's are about £200 now brand new. £300 gets you a console plus 3 bundled games.

Got one but as far as I'm aware there is no decent remote? Plus it's subtitle support is a bit iffy (have a little baby so use subtitles a lot when keeping the volume down)

Be careful when choosing a new bluray player for mkv playback. As far as I'm aware most bluray players contain the cinavia copy protection which will mute the audio on mkv rips that that contain this.

question now is that the 7200 sounds good but the 6500 is newer and has the newer sony interface. Is it always best to get the most current thing? PS3 is def going, the fans ramp up too much when it's been on a while.

To be honest i dont think you would see much deference between the 7200 and 6500 , was going to upgrade to UHP-H1 player but its still a 4K upscaling

The menu seems to be more like the ps4 on the 6500 which is something that interests me as I will be using my NAS a lot so browsing that in a nice enviroment is a plus
