upgrading bug

I built a gaming/virtualisation PC last year, 2700k, 16GB RAM, SSD, RAID the works. Should be good for at least the next three/four years. My 2009 27" iMac is due for an upgrade. That will sting the old bank balance but it's my main work machine so I don't need to justify the cost.

Staying on the bleeding edge is a mugs game, stay just behind the cutting edge and upgrading isn't too financially onerous.

I'll recommend a simple solution that worked for me about 5 years ago... upgrade to watercooling. Ever since I did that I couldn't be bothered to rip it all apart to upgrade a simple GPU or CPU. It cured me and even now I've gone back to air cooling I don't feel the urge anymore :)

I seem to have grown out of it or something. I literally have no time to think about playing games.

I leave the house around 9am for work and I'm home for around 10pm. That gives me enough time to read some forums and check facebook.

Last thing I bought was my opteron 144 system which insurance replaced with this current one which is an Athlon X2 or something with a 4850 gpu. :(

I'm a bitch for shiny things. I don't care if I won't use it, buyin it as assembling it is fun enough for me and gives me great amounts of pleasure, like a painting :)
Ive earned my money, I'll do whatever I want with it (legally), I don't need to justify myself to anyone!:p

Yeah the upgrade thing is a bugger, I've prob spent over 10k in 3 yrs on computers/monitors all in the name of Fps in games lol.. Trying to stop it now but it's hard..

I've spent about 2000 quid since last November to now, mostly hdds (i don't pay post flood prices ;) ) and RAID cards + Hot swap enclosures etc.. all in the name of a few RAID10 arrays. I've got dual 7970s in my 'gaming' machine.. however i've played about 5 hours of Dirt 3 since Feb. and thats it. I need to stop this.

its not so much that i want to make the thing future proof as it does everything i want brilliantly. i just like to fiddle with it which is the reason i built it myself in the first place

im a guy and i like to mess with things to find out how they work, if somthing breaks i like to find out why it breaks and try to fix it. i took apart my xbox just because i wanted to do the x clamp mod despite it being fine. ive now bought a dslr as i want to fiddle with lenses and stuff.

my warranty on my car is void because i fiddled with it and serviced it myself from new, i cant stop!!!

im still running
x6 1055t
4gb ram
460gtx 1gb

considering upgrading my gpu but wanting to see how good the 660gtx will be.

bf3 is the only game i havent been able to run on max settings with 2xaa and 16af

everything else has been okay , i only get 30-40fps in skyrim with hd textures and enb mods but in that game u dont really need high fps anyway.

i played max payne 3 fine on the highest settings and 2x aa/16af and got 40fps aswell which is enough for me when its not an FPS game

i dont see why people upgrade so much recently unless you are running 3x monitors it doesnt seem worth it

I last upgraded my PC about 8 years ago. It's been sat in a lockup ever since. Now I have a laptop, and the last bit of hardware I bought was a mouse, because my touchpad's given up.

Solution, stop worrying about the latest games. Or, spend all your money on alcohol and flights to obscure countries so you forget what a gpu is. Hell, I worked in a computer shop for 3 years and can barely remember what a printer does, except enrage me. I'm told it has some other function.

I think age and experience are the best remedies, though unfortunately they aren't always accessible to everyone. :)

I tend to stay away from bleeding edge, and I don't have the desire for every title I play to run at 60fps + multi-screens, etc. This makes it much cheaper. :D

For the average to upper end of average gamer (not that this is just about gaming), there's very little that an i5 / i5 2500k, 4gb ram and a 1.5gb to 2gb AMD 6900 / Nvidia gtx400 series video card can't handle at 1080 / 1200p.

I haven't looked at any pc hardware since I last upgraded 2 years ago.

Im sure within weeks something came out to make my system outdated, but I don't want to know about it.
