Upgrading CPU, m/b and RAM in a new case

Can anyone see anything glaring with this basket? My old i7-920 and motherboard have died, so it's time for an upgrade. I'm thinking Ryzen might be better although I have been considering an i5-9600K. A couple of questions...

1) Is the RAM compatible with the m/b?
2) I've seen lots of basket recommendations many with 3000mhz RAM and many with 3200mhz RAM. Is there any obvious reason not to go faster?
3) I'm assuming the AMD stock cooler is pretty decent and I don't think it's very tall so it should fit in the case right?
4) Any better mATX motherboard options out there?
5) Any other general advice?

Yes. Although Samsung B-Die is better for Ryzen and seems to avoid all/most issues lesser RAM sometimes encounters, but also costs a pretty penny.

Price and slim chance of it being stable unless RAM is top-notch (see above) as well as motherboard and getting a chip with good memory controller.

For a HTPC case, and an 8-core CPU, you may end up wanting an aftermarket cooler. The bundled Spire will fit though.

Go for the Mortar instead. It'll handle 8-core better. Doesn't cost much more.

That HTPC case is for ATX motherboards. Micro-ATX will fit, just wonder if something smaller would do.

I have a fairly long 1070 and it's more about the height and depth really. Happy with the width also as it's the same size as my amp so will fit nicely in my cabinet.
 
Aorus bundle for £255 with ryzen 2600+ b450 Aorus elite and 700w .. 16GB 300hz for £85..

If wanting to save cash

Ryzen 2600/2700 will be better the. Your old i7 due to there being a good design from your first Gen I core to 2nd and upwards .

Samsung B-Die only worth it if on sale, and you plan for big overclocks on x470 flagship boards personally

If gaming at 1080p, intel is better
 
I've seen Patriot Viper Steel 3866MHz C18 for £143.17. That "ought" to be B-Die, some say it is, but I've also heard it said that Patriot sometimes use E-Die. Mentioning it as it's the cheapest that might be B-Die. And it won't be top-notch B-Die as the rest of the timings aren't as tight as 8-Pack or G.Skill 3866 C18 kits. Cheapest confirmed B-Die I've seen would be G.Skill Ripjaws V 3200 C14 at around £175. I'd just go for a cheaper regular kit, most work fine and on the occasions they don't, just return for a different kit. And put that money towards something else.

And yes that Mortar.

The bundle Orbitalwalsh mentioned is very good value if needing a PSU as well.

Thanks Orb. Haven't been sure about that list's reliability on all the models listed, because there's some "iffy maybe" ones like Corsair 3600 18-19-19-39, for example.

Regarding the Patriot Viper Steel 3866 18-22-22-40 kit (which isn't listed in link above):

But again, they won't be the best B-Die.


Also Samsung B-Die is generally also favorable amongst overclockers and though this is not the screened top level B-Die found in specially pre-binned kits such as from 8 Pack and G.Skill these modules will still offer respectable overclocking performance or the ability to tigthen the timings up a little.

The timings are tighter on the more expensive kit.

You wouldn't notice the difference in day to day usage - but if you had to slacken timings to get memory stable there's obvious benefits to having tighter timings to begin with (but you shouldn't have any problems hitting 2933 (3000MHz).

He did say the memory and the heatsink were its best features. But also said for 8-core that motherboard might be pushing it, whereas he recommended the Mortar if overclocking on 8-core.
