Currently running 32 bit Vista but have purchased extra RAM so that I can utilise my 64 bit discs and 4 gig RAM, however, in the near future I will be upgrading my dual core cpu to a quad core. I know that when I upgrade my motherboard that I need to reformat and do a fresh install of Vista 64bit but does the same go for the CPU? In other words if I leave my old cpu in place then upgrade to 64 bit Vista would I have to reinstall 64 bit once the new processor arrives?

it'll be fine

you might have to reset the HAL (easy to do, ask here if you can't see all cores when you upgrade the cpu)
