Upgrading Dell PC

Hi

I have a Dell Dimension 5100 at work. It's get a Intel 945G chipset and currently a 3Ghz P3 processor and 4Gb ram.

It's slow as hell, so i'd like to upgrade the processor to a core2 or suchlike, nothing too expensive.

Anyone know what my options would be if at all?

Apparently it takes Core 2s, but only the 1066mhz FSB chips. So E21xx, E5200, E6xxx chips will work.
 
Most should work, but it depends on the actual motherboard and whether BIOS updates are available or not. My E8400 runs at 3Ghz and is miles faster than my old P4 3.4Ghz, so yes it'll be much faster, but does your board have PCI Express?

If not then I'd get a new motherboard for it to be worthwhile, though with DELL's that can be hard. Your best bet would then be to buy a new case aswell as a new cpu (e8xxx being more worthwhile in that case) and new memory etc...then canabalise your old compatible parts. Of course, following this route would have already caused a chain reaction, meaning you should probably just save and buy/build a whole new PC anyway!

If your old motherboard does have PCI Express then by all means, a cheaper Core2 would probably be a good buy, so go ahead and just add more life to your old system!
 
I think it was later 945 chipsets supported core 2 duo range, the core 2 duo range was launched around Sep 06.

You might need to email Dell.
