Hi All,

When I signed up to my 18month contract with Vodafone last April (through phones4u) I was told that as part of my deal I would be able to upgrade after 9 months which was a big thing for me as I do tire with phones rather quickly.

i'm interested in the HTC desire (as an upgrade from my magic) but as of yet phones4u aren't putting it on their website as 'available'. As vodafone are now allowing pre-orders for the desire do you reckon there's a chance that phones4u will allow me to upgrade or will i have to wait until phones4u show it as available?

Either that or the remaining 9 months will just be added to a new 18 or 24 month contract meaning you could be tied in for a significant portion of your life.

These days I'm a sim free man and put money away for a change of phone, I find it works out so much cheaper in the long run.

I thought that too - but once you do the maths that is not always the case.
I guess it all depends on how often you want to change your phone.
Take for example the new Desire:

Well to buy on SIM Free the best I've seen is £390.
Let's assume you want to keep the phone for 2 years.
That's 24 months at the cheapest "data included" tarrif, lets say £20.
£480 for 24 months line then £390 for the phone - total of £870.

Now buy the Desire on Vodafone.
£30 per month gets you plenty of minutes, texts and web.
Initial phone cost is £0.
So your 24 months cost you £720.

£150 saving.

But as I said, this is assuming you are happy to keep a phone for 24 months.
Want a new phone every year and I can quite believe SIM free is the way to go.

The only time I've been offered an early upgrade (on o2) is when they send me a letter about 5-6 months before my contract ends, offering me phones that you buy PAYG for £99.99 and obviously then have another 18 month contract :(

i'm in the same boat as you , i already have a vodafone contract 25 a month which will end in april 2011 .
and if you're willing to pay a bit extra do what i've done .

on mobiles.co.uk there is a 12 month vodafone contract, £19.99 for the desire . £40 a month with unlimited text and internet . 300 minutes talk time .

when the year is up i will cancel the contract . also in a years time my other vodafone contract will be up for upgrade .
then its up to you to keep the desire or sell it on ebay .

does that make sense ?

Roughly a yearly change of phone is what I do.

Thing is I'm on an unbelievable Sim Only deal with Vodafone that I just cannot match elsewhere (600mins, 3000txts, 500mb data) £15 p/m that was on a 12 month basis but is now a 30 day rolling.

Generally the sale of the previous phone pays for at least 50-60% of the new phone so I'm only generally shelling out £100 max on top to get a minty fresh handset.

I just stick £10 p/m into my Paypal account which I never miss ,and then use that to buy the upgrade & this way I'm now never tied in to anyone for any period of time.

But you can do that with a contract phone too. In your case Sim Free will be cheaper as that is a very good monthly package.

Voda have stock of the Desire now if you are wanting to order, ive just orderd mine (upgrading from the magic) receive on Wednesday and got:

300m
Unlim txts
Unlim Internet
Something about international calls too (Vodafone passport is it?)
24months
£25 a month

£30 for the phone

I didnt expect to get a good deal this year as last year i upgraded to the magic and was only paying £20 a month with the phone for free
