Upgrading for crysis

Yeah crysis will be a hungry game, and the resolution you will be running it at will make a big difference too. How big is your screen?

I would wait till crysis is out before you buy anything
Quoted for truth, in addition to not knowing what hardware suits it best until it's out, it could be delayed for weeks or months by which time hardware could have moved on.

However if you have to upgrade now;

You should mention your budget

Upgrade when Crysis arrives and it is benchmarked. Stuff will be inevitably cheaper, and you will be able to make a well informed choice about which kit to buy.

However the urge to tweak is strong, and I couldn't even follow my own advice.

I have just gone for the mid-grade. Got the Core 2 Duo E4300 (oclocked to 2.7GHz) and the ASROCK 4 CORE VSTA for £107 total. This board has DDR, DDR II, AGP and PCI-E support. This satisfied my urge to tweak now.

I couldn't resist spending another £50 on 2Gigs of Kingston DDRII. Even though I should have waited for prices to drop more. When Crysis rolls around I will have the chance to get the most compelling DX10 card; ATi's new versus the established NVIDIA.

I gotta feeling that, like the BF series, they're going to dumb it down graphically at the final second of release so that all the DX9 users will be able to play it, or at least make it so that they can sell the game to low end computer users.

i.e. foliage and grass being allowed to not being shown on 1 computer but allowed on the other giving higher end computer users the choice to either lowering they're graphics options or getting killed by an enemy you couldnt even see.

Crysis is coming out end of June, but as said nobody knows if it will be delayed.

Last time I heard K8L (Barcelona Quad-Core) will be launched this summer first on servers chips, and October for retail chips. If you don't overclock then get the best X2 you can afford. If you intend to overclock then as suggested go E4300 + cheap mobo. 2Gb DDR2 can be had for as little as £52 so no excuse for not upgrading.
