Upgrading for NWN2

So the GeForce 3 I have just isn't going to cut it for NWN2 it seems. Can anyone give me some information on how I might A) determine what type of graphics card I need to buy for my system (basically a tool that scans my machine and gives me the spec of all my hardware would save me a lot of messing about), B) some good new alternatives. I'd be looking to spend around £100-150.

Cheers.

This would fall into your budget if you absolutely must upgrade for £100-150: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_This_Week_Only_25.html#aGX_2d088_2dLT

However I'm guessing that you probably have quite an old system in general and hence you might be better off simply doing a full upgrade (mobo/cpu/gfx and probably memory as well). AGP cards carry a price premium and depending on what you currently have you may end up being cpu limited anyway.

This will tell us what we need to know about your cpu/mobo/ram: http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-137.zip

Thanks for the info. I did upgrade a while back, perhaps 6 months. Here's the details:

AMD Sempron 2800+ Running at 1.7
ASUS K8V-X SE AGP 2.0
1gp DDR RAM

I was really hoping the weak link would be my ancient GeForce 3. However looking at the recommended specs for NWN2, its looking like a new chip will be order as well.

E6300 & appropriate mobo/RAM + 7600 GT or pref if you can spend a little more the 7900 GS/X1950 Pro and you'd be very well off I'd think :)

That wouldn't cost the earth either but substantially more than £100 - £150 for just the graphics obviously and might need to factor in a new PSU too.

I think that a quick fix for your system would be a 2nd hand 6600gt or similar. Maybe an x800 of some sort. 2nd hand you should be able to pick one up for £50 ish that will keep your system just about ticking along for a few more months. Save up and get a full new system when vista is out and the bugs are ironed.

Hmmm, a full system upgrade for one game (I'm not an avid gamer to be honest) sounds a bit much. Plus, the GeForce 3, the reliable, ultra powerful GeForce 3, has tided me over for years, and NWN2 is the only game that's been beyond it's capabilities I've encountered. So being tided over isn't what I'm after exactly.

Of course, if it's just unfeasable to upgrade the card itself to anything worthwhile, I'll just save up and eventually get a whole new system. I am aware that its often a reality that one component holds back the entire machine, however I feel it's the graphic's card now.

Anyway, the two options, you mentioned Tetras, does Overclockers happen to sell either? I tried a google search and was a bit unsucessful.

Oh, the gf3 is definitely the bottleneck in your system, but the trouble is even if you slapped in a top gfx card, your cpu is likely to struggle in the most demanding of modern titles.

To be honest spending £150 on gfx card when you have a 1.7ghz Sempron would be somewhat of a waste - I'd suggest maybe looking for a secondhand card from the geforce6 or x800 series. Anything more than that would be overkill really.
