With the spec in sig, in the alpha i was getting the following.
single gtx 470, 40-50fps
sli gtx 470, 70-80fps
The first trial release didnt support multi gpu, ran it at 1920x1200, settings on high, options were pretty limited in the trial. Like bfbc2, a quad will be a must for bf3.
The beta, which is out sometime this month, will probably have a few more graphics options, and give us a beter idea of what the finished game will run like.
guaranteed it wont look like that
From My observations regarding gfx cards from ATI/Nvidia, they both have driver problems now and then, perhaps more from ATI granted but as far as overheating goes this is where Nvidea really fail ATI are really cool by comparison. Not that I'm trying to sway you, just trying to dispel a few myths
BTW I wasn't aware of the 16gb limit myself, by chance I have pro luckily, not that it matters as I cant see me going over 16gb on my next build.
Pretty much every review I have read and seen contradicts your heat statement.
