Hi,

I have a AMD 2500xp with 1GB of PC3200 RAM running on an Abit NF7 motherboard. I only ever really browse the internet and download from newsgroups and torrent sites.

I have that feeling that I want to upgrade to a 3500 or higher 64bit AMD but seeing as my PC usage is hardly CPU intensive will I really notice much difference between the two processors?

Thanks in advance :)

I have just upgraded from an Athlon XP 2500 @ 3200 on a Abit NF7-S and 1Gb RAM. I'm similar to you and I upgraded to an Athlon 64 3700+ and at the moment I partly wish I hadn't bothered as I just don't tax it. I miss my XP 2500+ set-up as it truely did everything I asked of it and it was solid as a rock 24/7

It's to the point that I may just sell the Shuttle on but keep 1 of the disks for data archive and just see how things go as a) I have a company laptop and b) I rec a P4 2.4G would do me. Time will tell as I do however intend to get my VMWare sessions running again, but I'll need another 1GB RAM for that really

I'm still here with that chip, but with 512mb ram instead and i don't see which you would really need 64bit for downloading and web browsing :)

cripes i echo the above, unless you have more money than you know what to do with.. The XP2500+ is still a fine chip and is more than ample for your needs (i am using one now to play games with and it can do that ok with a little tweaking)

I so miss my XP 2500+ the only thing I'm doing now is starting to have a look at games again, I.e NFS series etc. but that was never the intention. I think in reality if I could go back 2 weeks I'd stick with what I had. The plan at the mo is to get MS Vista Beta installed to have a look etc (working for a MS Gold Partner) Then I'll head back to MS XP Pro 32bit and get back to my original plan of using it for Virtual Server, web surfing and itunes etc. If I start downloading again I'll use a virtual XP session so that I leave the original host O/S nice and clean etc.

But all in all at the moment I am tempted to sell my shuttle and one of my 17" TFTs and re-evaluate what I want out of a PC. Internet, e-mail, music and virtual sessions are the top of the list

I too have an NF7S coupled with an XP2500, and I am so glad that I am keeping it.

I upped to a Winchester 3200 at first, and found it to be on par with each other ( at first, before I did any real tests ) and was actually close to gutted that I even bothered... To be fair however, the XPM I had been running @ 2.6 24-7 and the Winnie at the time was stock, but still...

I have since upgraded all my PCs now, to 64 Bit, my eldest lad ( Joshie, 8 ) is now using the Winchester @ 2.5 for his PC, my youngest son is using a Newcastle 3000 @ 2.4 as his and my daughter was using a Sempron 3100, however, thats such a poor performer, even clocked that I have taken that to work for an internet machine and she now has the NF7S as its a lot quicker.

The XP2500 is more than capable of anythign you could ask for it. I would consider having a try at clocking it if I were you as all *** 2500's I have had can do 200FSB, some with little effort, some with none at all, and the NF7S has a great little clocking thingy in its BIOS where you can simply run the CPU as a 3200, so maybe yours will have that too, and if so, you have your faster machine.
