If I want to switch my 4850 for a 5870, is it OK to :

1. Upgrade my Vista64 system to the latest Catalysts (9.9?)
2. Switch off machine and swap 4850 for 5870
3. Switch on PC.
4. Profit.

Or do I need to do the old failsafe way of uninstalling the ATi drivers completly, configure Vista to use some random basic VGA driver and then do the card swap? As you can gather, I am wanting to do the minimal amount of work here...

Minimal amount of work is all you need. Install the drivers after you change the cards though.

  1. shut down pc
  2. remove old card
  3. install new card
  4. boot up pc, install latest cat drivers
  5. reboot and all should be fine
