I have this card at the moment: http://uk.msi.com/product/vga/N560GTX-Ti-Twin-Frozr-II-OC.html

The reason i'm thinking about upgrading is I experience frame drops when playing The Secret World MMO, when things get chaotic. It seems to be pretty hard on my machine, though it doesn't get very warm so i'm wondering do I just need a new card?

Here's a spec of my machine I copy and pasted from another post:

MSI Z68A-GD65-G3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard
MSI GTX 560 Ti 1024MB DDR5 TWIN FROZR II OC Edition Graphics Card
Intel Sandybridge i5-2500K Unlocked Core i5 Quad-Core Processor (overclocked to 4.2)
Corsair DDR3 XMS3 8GB Desktop Memory
Crucial Solid State Drive2 128GB M4 Solid State Drive
Noctua NH-C14 CPU cooler
XFX Pro 850W Core Edition '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply

1gb vram is low by today's standards.

It depends what you want to spend really. 7850 is excellent value, next step up is 7950 (as the 7870 prices itself out of the running IMO).

If you want Nvidia then the only good value card they make now is the GTX 670.

So if value is what you are after then the 7950 can be had for £208 delivered right now so that's got to be the card to have.

All depends if he's overclocking really. The stock cooler more than gets the job done and a stock 670 can be had for around £270 if you look hard enough :)

Lots have moaned about the stock coolers being "whiney". I would avoid them but OcUK are very expensive at the moment.

Hmm I guess it depends if they are overclocked. Never noticed a review say that they are whiny or annoying but then that's just running them stock.

I can't seem to find any at £270 atm which is odd as prices seem to have gone up.

If you look around you can find a 670 gigabyte windforce x3 for under 300 pounds today that would be my choice.

Just found an Asus direct CU for £309, Palit Jetstream for £308 and a stock one for around £280. Definitely worth the extra £20.

Also just found a MSI PE for £308.

Thanks for the feedback. I was thinking the 1gb vram was quite low now, couldn't afford the 2gb version at the time. I like the Nvidia cards but over £300 is a bit out of my price range at the moment... so might have to go the AMD route.

I could stretch to around £200 now... but is it worth it, will I notice the difference? Or should I hold out and save for the 670? I guess I could save until the end of the month and get the 670!

You could go for the 7950 which will be a substantial upgrade and without a frame counter running on TSW, you wouldn't notice it is slower than a 670 and this would save you a few squid.

The 7950 can be found for £208 delivered. At that price it's unbeatable.

If, however, you don't like AMD nor their drivers then I would hold out for a 670.

Thanks for the response. I'll have to take the day to think about and decide whether to go for the 7950 now or save for a bit and get the 670! :)

For £208 that does sound tempting and I could buy it now!

is the card being fully utilized by the MMO?

I would monitor the usage to be sure before deciding to upgrade. MMOs are heavy on the cpu which holds back gpus.

(asking because you said it wasn't getting hot, i have no idea what the mmo is like)

Hmm, i'll have to check that later and see. Hopefully the gpu usage is maxed out or could be more complicated than just a new gpu and all is sorted!

OK... I think it's definitely the card. It sits at around 85% usage when i'm just killing mobs... not too much going on, on the screen. Couldn't get the chance to test it when things get messy but I imagine it's hitting 100% when there's a lot happening on the screen.

After some thinking, I think i'll invest in the 670... will just take out finance as i'll have the money to pay it off later this month. Done some reading about... is the Gigabyte version good? It looks good!

The Windforce (I assume that's what one you mean?) with triple fans is a very good card yes.

IMO it's a bit ugly though, but that doesn't matter too much..

Also consider the MSI power edition as it's about the same price or less and comes with a much better looking cooler IMO :)

tbh even if it was the cpu and not the gpu there's no worthwhile upgrade from a 2500k for a mmorpg anyway. Would just need to clock it higher if it isn't overclocked.

I do like MSI stuff, will have to shop around and do a bit more research before buying but will be one of the two.

It's overclocked to 4.2 at the moment, pretty safe as i've never really needed anything more. I guess if the new card doesn't do enough can up things with the cpu.

extremely happy gigabyte 670 windforce x3 owner here and that was going from a 580 lightning

Thanks, looks like a quality card!

Thanks everyone for the help, much appreciated! :)
