Hi,

I’m upgrading my internet to 1,000mbps (Fibre to the house) from 70mbps and have some questions around the mesh and router/modem.

I’m upgrading all my BT discs (4 of them) from ac2600 to ax6600 (which have been very hard to come by, but found some second hand).

My question is, do I keep BT’s smart hub 2 or do I change out the router aswell? The smart hub 2 isn’t great, but does that matter if I’m just creating a mesh network by turning off the wifi on the hub and just running the first disc from the hub via ethanet?

Or should I be turning the hub into modem only, running to a new router and then running the discs from that?

My house only runs on wifi, I don’t have anything hard wired…i run a few things from the smart hub like the TV, hive hub and a few other minor things. But everything else runs directly from the discs/wifi.

I read somewhere that if you’ve got good nodes for a mesh, then ideally you need a good router too, and considering the smart hub 2 is wifi 5 only, and the discs are wifi 6 that I should pick up a better router.

Thoughts welcome.

For now keep the Smart Hub 2, turn off the WiFi and see how well the discs run. The router's WiFi will not affect the mesh performance since it's a completely separate thing. It's only if the SH2 can't handle FTTP speeds then I would consider replacing it.

I've had 1gbps internet from BT for a while. Wasn't happy with the performance of my SH2 + 3 discs. Just swapped everything out so I'm running a pair of Asus ZenWifi XT12s and a pair of ASUS RT-AX92U AX6100. The first XT12 is my modem + router, the other 3 are running via wireless backhaul. Much happier now with my speeds and coverage; I've got a lot of thick internal brick walls and the penetration and signal strength seems to be better in previous dead zones.
