Upgrading From 7850?

Hi guys, I'm getting the upgrade itch and want to get a new graphics card but I don't know whether the outlay will be worth it.

I am not happy that some of the latest games that I am playing won't run at a constant 60fps with all the bells and whistles on. For example I am playing Assassin's Creed 3 and even with using the latest 13.1 drivers I am only getting 35-40fps in town and that is with having environmental detail only set to high. The same was happening with Hitman: Absolution too, the game would run flawlessly but I don't know whether it is something linked with AMD... but it really seems to struggle with lighting effects.

I am running my 7850 at 1050/1450 MHZ and I'm planning to get a 120hz in the future but think I would need to upgrade my graphics card first. I was very tempted with the GTX 670 KFA2 that was on offer recently but held off.

What are your thoughts ladies/gents? Any help would be appreciated.

If you really feel the need to upgrade, then a 7950 would probably be the best option, but I'd try overclocking a bit more to see whether it gives satisfactory performance after that.

Push the overclock further on the 7850. I'd say you should be able to reach at least 1150 on the core.

Although you wish to see a higher frame rate, would you say the game play is smooth? I ask since if I had an ideal frame rate in mind, say instead of 55 I was getting 40, as long as it was delivering smooth and steady performance (and my eyes weren't being strained), it wouldn't bother me. :)

What is your cpu running at?

Have you checked your GPU usage in scenes that you get low frame rate?

From what I recall AC3 CPU scaling is quite poor, so if your 2500K is not overclocked, overclocking it should help.
