Upgrading from 980ti, what to?

yeah theres a whole forum section near the bottom of the forum list. I can't see anything to explain the access rules so might be worth messaging a mod to clarify. Unless anyone else knows?

Edit found it:https://www.overclockers.co.uk/forums/help/boardUsage/

I didnt have trust activated but do now, so i guess ill find out within 24hr if thatll get me access or if i need o hold out for 1000 posts (a few more years!!)

imho the 3080 is the first true successor we have had for the 980Ti

1080Ti, 2070S, 5700 XT and a like are imho not enough of an upgrade the 2080's were not much better than the 1080Ti and the 2080Ti was a literally the worst value for money card in the history of GPUs

I have a 2070S and an UW 3440x1440. It depends on the refresh rate of your monitor and the games you play. The 2070S runs well and can manage most games at a good frame rate. But if your monitor is greater than 60Hz and you play more modern games then you really need at least a 3070.

is it just located in the list of forums? If so then i cant see it unfortunately, shame as id much rather trust a member here than an auction site!
It's really not worth buying used at the moment as prices are still too high, if you are going to pay £300+ for second hand then you may as well wait for a RTX3070 (with 3-5 year warranty) or whatever AMD can offer or wait till the new cards are in stock then buy something used as there will a greater choice at a lower asking price.

The 1080ti offered a ~75% increase in performance over the 980ti for the same (inflation accounted for) price. To say this isn't a big enough jump... I'd say that's pretty hefty. It's a larger bump up than the approx ~50% increase of the 3080 over the 2080. Yes the price hasn't increased with inflation this time, I'll give you that, however you're not getting near doubling in VRAM you got with the 9-10 move. I'm using 1440p figures there, will be slightly different for 4k, probably showing the 1080ti in even greater light.

What are you basing this off? If you're using Nvidia's announcement claims, I'd reassess your expectations. The 3080 was supposed to be double 2080 performance however it came in around ~65% of an increase at 4k. If you apply that delta to Nvidia's claim of the 3070 matching the 2080ti, you get around 2080 level performance. I might not be getting that comparison down exactly right, but my point is that Nvidia's claimed performance is almost certainly absolute best case, with dlss/rt on etc.

True the 3070 will be good for the price but if people have to wait anyway then paying a little extra for the 3080 makes way more sense, if they can get one for £650 that is.

So am i better off waiting and buying in november when everything is clearer? I am looking for powering 1440p UW at over 60hz as its a 144 screen as mentioned, so i want the best outcome to hit those figures from a value perspective as although i could just go out and buy a 3080, i dont see that as valuable given the time i spend playing games, but i also dont want to play the forever waiting game for the next possibly better GPU

Im not against waiting for a 3070 but im not paying markup on it and im not waiting months

That's why I said "at least". Personally I think a 3080 is preferred but OP made it pretty clear that they thought that was too expensive. I have a 2070S. Some modern titles it struggles to run 60fps with that on ultra without DLSS and so on. So the 2080ti will be about 72fps. The 3080 about 120fps. Obviously a 3070 is going to be less but the price should be nice.
