Hi everyone I'm having a little upgrade of my pc, I'm currently using a 4870x2 2gb GPU I was going to upgrade to a 2x 4890 in CF, or should I go into the 5000 series?

I agree with Stulid. Going from a 4870x2 to two 4890's won't make 'that' much difference, and if they aren't good overclockers then not much at all. About the only upgrade path you have imo would be a 5970, a 480 or an xfire / sli set up.

I doubt your current card is struggling much so...yes, wait a while. The upgrade will be much more satisfactory when you do buy something new.

I went to a 480 and the games i was struggling @ 1920x1200 16xaf 8xaa with now run smoothly. Can run top settings and mods on gta4 now too and flawless on 32xaa on the new f1 game. to put it bluntly my old 4870x2 was really really rubbish.

just to edit this: the nvidia card is not much more power however it can add AA at almost any level to the games you can run fine with 4870x2 with no performance hit. dx11 makes no difference to me personally tho this is subjective and i prefer dx10s look and feel on most games tho.

example age of conan dx10 1920x1200 absolute max settings and sliders
4870x2 min 10fps max 70fps with errors in grass and water physics and ambient occusion and drops to 2fps indoor due to a poor game engine.
480gtx min 30fps max 150fps with excellent non buggy grass and water, still buggy ambient occlusion and 150fps minimum indoors!

basically depends what you play. If you play stuff like mafia2 and age of conan and the recently dead apb on a private server you just won't enjoy the experience with a dual chip ati card. I upgraded purely because the games i play called for it.
