i'm thinking of upgrading my gpu for something that will rn great at 1920 by 1080 res. I had a quick look at gtx 580 but the price seems a bit steep for me at the moment. What card would guys suggest?

Please quote your budget as this will help people determine what sort of card fits you. Even better if you could also quote what you are going to use it for (gaming by the looks of it - perhaps specific games ?)

I currently have p45 +qx6850 + 4gb ram. But will be upgrading that soon. My budget is about £300. I have to say though that i would like something quiet, from what i've read the gtx 480 seems to generate a lot of heat and is noisy, but i might be wrong

At load it will likely become way too intrusive, so for something quieter I would either look at one of the current gpu's with a good after market cooler like the MSI twin frozr, or wait to see how the 7800's fare with stock cooling. In the meantime, check out some reviews. :)

There is always headphones. :D I say that with some sincerity as I don't ever recall having a gpu that was too noisey at idle and ideally balanced at load. I haven't water cooled my rigs (well apart from one), so I have / prefer to use ear muffs, though in my case my 480 is non-reference which helps quite a bit.

GTX 480 if you can live with the heat/power consumption/noise at load when gaming. If not would go with a non reference GTX 570. I went from a 260 to a 470 and felt that was a worthwhile upgrade for myself. Put the rest towards upgrading CPU/mobo/ram.

I already got £500 set aside to upgrade my mobo+cpu+ram and all. I would only like to know what gpu i could get that would run my games at 1920 by 1050 and not cost me a fortune. From what i've read ati runs real hot and is kinda noisy, so i'm gonna stick to nvidia atm. Just really unsure which one to go for. Gtx 480 seems to high high power consumption and loud/hot.

£300

If you want to spend the full 300, then the OCUK 580GTX is the best card for the price. If you prefer a brand name then there are others around 315-350.

If you want a brand name and absolutely cannot go above 300, then I would suggest a 570GTX, perhaps the MSI TwinFrozr iii power edition.

Both cards will take any game on the market at the moment with max/very near to max settings at 1920x1080
