upgrading from a gtx 970? Not worth it?

first question is, do you even need an upgrade or just fancying a switch to something new and shiny?

You get far more performance by skipping upgrade generations, there's no point upgrading just for the sake of it. Put the money you'd spend on a Pascal upgrade into a Pascal V2.0 upgrade whatever that may be and just get full use out of the price of the 970.

I wouldn't say I desperately need to upgrade right this minute. The new and shiny syndrome was definitely there prior to the launch of the 1080/1070 - that was until I saw the prices, then that soon disappeared :D

I'll probably just wait it out. My PC savings pot will be ridiculous by then lol I've been saving since I last bought the 970 haha.

It's the same, if not worse with the CPU side, i'm still on a 3570k and I just can't bring myself to upgrade that to a 6700k as the price just doesn't warrant the pitiful performance increase there either.

Buy now and enjoy, or join the list of people who wait and wait lol

I normally do buy at release, and that's what I've done in the past, but the price rise this gen pretty much stopped me in my tracks. There's only so far I will go before I say enough is enough

When I saw the prices for the 1070/1080 I was literally gobsmacked. It was a "WTF" moment. I hate spending money at the best of times so when I can see that the price doesn't justify the product I don't buy it, whether I have the actual cash or not. Until the 1070 comes down to £320 then I'll never even consider buying it.

The GTX 970 is one of the greatest GPUs ever made. Absolutely perfect at 1080p and still going strong. It runs extremely cool, is barely audible, and requires very little power. It's no wonder Nvidia increased its market share to an unprecedented level following the card's release.

The R9 290, by contrast, runs incredibly hot, is obnoxiously loud, and requires a tremendous amount of power.

To put into perspective just how good the GTX 970 is, it took AMD 2 years and a die shrink to replicate it.

well you have a few choices the way I see it.

1. go for a 1080 and skip the next one or 2 generations.
2. wait and get the 1080Ti and then skip one or 2 gens.
3. keep the 970, get 1080, sell it just before Ti gets released, buy a Zotac Ti, enjoy it for the next 5 years.

I decided to go with option 3 myself.

option 4. buy a 2nd hand 980ti from someone thats got to much cash and wants a 1080 or 1080ti..

that's what im thinking about doing

Mine is sitting at 34oc idle and loads at around 66 oc. So there is your runs incredibly hot out of the window. My PCS+ cooler does not run obnoxiously loud as reviews will attest to. Sure it uses a lot of power but it's nothing you will notice on your power bill as many threads have shown.

So sure the stock cooler was crap but buy any decently cooled version and you won't have any of these problems with a 290 or pretty much any AMD card on the market. Bringing up the problems that pretty much only the stock cooler had is not cool these days.

just gone from a g1 gaming 970 to g1 gaming 1080 as my acerx34 was struggling..

1080 really is the sweet spot for 3440x1440p gaming!

The 1070 is still suffering what the 1080 is, brand new release and limited stock. The fact that any stock that DOES come in, gets bought really fast, is testament to the demand and desire existing regardless of the price increase.

Just got to wait it out for a month or so and hope stock levels increase and prices drop back down a little... though the brexit has pushed prices up across the board by 10-30% or more (nowinstock.com shows that the gainward 1080 phoenix has a last price of £569.99 when in stock, it's now £638.99!)

Thankfully only 1080p, but 144Hz. Ideally I like to keep frames at a minimum of 60fps

And the 970 doesn't do that?? What kind of stupid and pointless settings are you applying?

OCed it as well?

Pretty sure a 970 can play almost everything at 1080p@60fps unless its extremely badly optimised and doesn't run well even on a GTX1080.

If you really wanted extra bit of oomph then probably selling the 970 and buying 2nd hand 980ti would be wise choice, should only cost you around £150 on top and it should be roughly the increase you're after. Should handle 1080p for another 2 years or so.
