Hi there,

I'm planning to do a full upgrade (excluding GPU) on my 2014 build but I'm completely out of the loop. What is the best option for a CPU for gaming? I'm at 1080p currently but planning to go to 1440p. My GPU is a GTX 1070 (which I'm not planning to upgrade yet) Is it worth waiting for Comet-Lake or is Zen 2 a good option? Thanks

I'm happy to spend around £350 max on the cpu (unless this is overkill). Also, when I said a complete upgrade, I'll only be looking for a new mobo, cpu and ram. I was also planning on reusing my hyper 212 evo. Is there anything additional I'd need that didn't come with it originally to use with Zen 2?

You'll want a 3700X then, whole budget and what parts you need would help, PSU etc

I'd say 3600X for gaming. Its almost same perf in games as 3700X, but much cheaper.
Comet Lake is end of May, and I really doubt Intel will beat price/performance of Zen2.

If you plan to keep the new system for 5+ years, then I'd recommend the 3700X, for the reason that it's the assumed CPU to be used in both the PS5 and the XSX consoles. This means games ported from console will benefit from 8C16T for many years.

maybe but it's still not going to give him an upgrade path.
buying a second hand 5+ year old CPU is really just a dead end whereas AM4 will give him options.
Oh I agree, there’s nothing left after that, but for less than £100 it’s a night and day upgrade, especially when you consider that games are now taking advantage of hyperthreading, the older i7’s have found a new lease of life, this will do me for another few years yet and one more GPU upgrade
