Hi guys.
I'm upgrading from a GTS 250 to something else.
Someone mentioned the GTX 550 and the Radeon 5670 as possible upgrades.
Is there any truth to this? I know nothing about specs so I need help!
Thanks in advance.

No...5670 is slower than even the 9800GT (note that GTS250 is basically a 9800GTX+), and GTS550 is only around as fast as 5770, which is only a bit faster than GTS250.

If you want a worthwhile upgrade, you should at least look at GTX460/GTX470/6850/5850/6870 range cards.

But of course, if your CPU was a bottleneck then upgrading graphic card would get as much improvement as it should.

My cpu is a dual core 2.8Ghz. I got told about bottlenecking and I'm concerned if this will happen with mine. so the GTX 550 is a bad choice?

Yes, as while it IS faster than the GTS250, it is not faster by a big enough margin to justify as an upgrade.

For most modern demanding games, dual-core at 2.8GHz is simply not good enough anymore. You should start considering upgrading your CPU as well. If you got the money, upgrading to SandyBridge platform...but if you are on a tight budget, you can try picking up a 2nd hand Q6600 G0 for £50-£60.

What if I was to get the Radeon 5770?
Would that be a good fit for my system?
I'd pick up a CPU later and yeh I'm on a tight budget.

What in your opinion would be better though? CPU or Gfx card? Ive only got 100 quid max to spend.

5770 is pretty much around the same speed as the GTS550...so no.

The bare minimum that's worth upgrading from the GTS250 I would say the GTX460.

was looking at the GTX 550 Ti. is that any good?

How much do you have to spend? What resolution do you intend to game at?

This would offer you better performance than the GTX 550 Ti and probably cheaper!

my monitor1920x1080 but really i prefer windowed mode (to browse the web on the other screen i have) so i usually end up at 1366x768 wndowed (dont judge me!)

and yeh that 460 looks right up my street price wise, this GTS 250 nets me 40+ fps in most games on medium (i dont really mind about high) while stil retaining the dual screen functionality so if i can play Battlefield3 on that card on low-medium i honestly dont mind. will this be possible?

The 460 will be a massive upgrade on your current 250GTS, I've attached a few benchmarks below comparing the 460 to the 8800GT which is only a little slower than your 250. I should imagine you'll be able to pretty much max out battlefield 3 at 1366x768 with the 460 and still maintain good fps, providing that is you couple it with a quad core CPU ;)
