In abit of a dilemna, been using my trusty i5 3570k for a good 6-7 years now and i think its starting to show its age a little. Recently upgraded to a 980ti from 2x680's but feel rest of the system is lagging behind now.

The problem is what upgrade path to take? My form factor is matx and want to stick with that.

Ideally want to keep with using my corsair dominator ddr 16gb ram as it cost a bomb when i bought it back then!

Im also using a custom loop so would i need a new waterblock as well to suit the new motherboard?

What would people recommend i do for an upgrade?
Board and cpu if i was to stick with my current ram config

Or board, cpu and ram?

I game mostly and do some overclocking.

Thanks for your help.

buy a i7 3770k for about £110 and sell the i5 3570k, overclock to about 4.5ghz and you are good to go. That's what I did anyway and it only cost me about £50 overall

I think you should bite the bullet and go DDR4 RAM if you are wanting to replace the motherboard. Trying to stick with DDR3 will limit options too much.
As for swapping out the CPU I guess it depends on what sort of overclock you have at the moment, if you are at 4.5ghz+ then I personally wouldn't go down that route (I had a 3570k @ 4.5 and waited for a good offer to turn up on Ryzen).

Okay say i was to fully upgrade to DDR4.. What recommendations would people recommend in terms of socket? I've been out of the loop for awhile... Skylake, coffee lake, Kaby lake? Whats the best route and cpu to go for at the moment?

As already recommended I'd sell your 3570k and grab a 3770k or 4790k of you have a z97 board. The amount of money you will spend upgrading to a DDR4 system when you could just buy a new cpu will be ridiculous. You'd end up spending well over £500 buying a new cpu, ram, motherboard and watercooliing parts if you wanted those and in reality there wouldn't be much difference than if you just bought a 3770k/4790k.

Also for gaming, no difference whatsoever between ddr3 and ddr4. The only reason I'd say go ddr4 route is if it offers you something you need such as m.2 ssd etc

Hello fellow 3570K user :)
Upgrading an old 3570K to a 3770k is nice if you need the extra threads here and now, and it will probably be the easiest and cheapest option for you too.
But we are still talking about a 6 years old CPU which kind of sucks since upgrading should be about getting into the now for a gamer, or at least into something that is much newer then what you previously had.
That 3770k is only going to get older and I’m guessing your motherboard is 6 years old too, so it would suck if that started acting up in a year or two.

However, you are in the same dilemma as Sandy Bridge owners because DDR3 ram has not been supported since the Broadwell days and currently DDR4 ram is expensive as heck!
Prices are slowly falling again but it will probably be early 2019 before it really starts to show.

For me as a 3570K user I have decided to just wait for 2019 since AMD’s 7nm Ryzen sounds interesting but you have several options if you really want to upgrade soon.
