Upgrading from my Ryzen 7 2700X

I currently have a Ryzen 7 2700X, I built the system near the end of 2018. I think it's a 2nd gen, Pinacle.

I'm a bit annoyed of having 3200mhz RAM and not being able to use it, so was thinking of selling my motherboard/CPU and doing an upgrade.

I was looking at the 3700X or the 3800X. Are they basically the same thing, just different speeds?

Has Intel come out with anything that can compete at the same price?

Might not need to upgrade your board if you buy a 3700 or 3800 as they are better for supporting high speed ram. 3700/3800 only real difference is 100mhz boost more on the 3800, though 3800 is a 105 watt cpu vs 65 watt on the 3700 so might run a bit hotter.

Depends on your motherboard and if there's an update to allow 3000 series support.

Thanks.

Did a bit of reading and your right about the power consumption, not sure it's worth it for a very small speed boost.
Setting my eyes on the 3700X at the moment.

I have a AX370 motherboard at the moment.

Check their site to see if theres bios updates for 3000 series support.

Checked and it does support the 3700X, but I know my current RAM.
Team Group Dark Pro "8Pack Edition" 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-25600C14 3200MHz Dual Channel Kit
Is not listed under their compatibility list, so I would really love to find a motherboard which does.
I don't want to change my CPU to find out that I still can't run my RAM at max speed.

Might work going by the product page

8PACK SAYS

I recommend using 3200MHz or 3600MHz 8Pack edition team group 16GB memory kits with Ryzen. I’ve tested this in both X470 and X570 platforms and both show excellent results with tight CAS timings. All my 8Pack memory is guaranteed screened Samsung B-Die. The OCUK Product codes are MY-08L-TG & MY-08Q-TG.

Samsung B-die chips of those memories are well supported by Zen2 AGESA/BIOS.
So would require some screwing up from motherboard maker to not have them work with Zen2.

Unfortunately the Gigabyte page doesn't show RAM support for the Matisse range.

I'm just worried I'm going to buy a new CPU and still be in the same situation.

I have the same board and my ram will not run at 3200 if I use the XMP profile, I just manual set mine and set the volts to 1.35 if I remember and it runs fine and has done for months. I just think it's this board, give it a try.

If I'm looking at the correct motherboard (GA-AX370-Gaming 5 (rev. 1.0)) it says it supports 3200mhz OC with supported CPU's.

There's lots of videos on youtube pitting the 3700x against the 3800x. Nearly all conclude that the 3800x isn't worth the extra money and runs much hotter.

So I wouldn't change the motherboard, particularly at a time like this, a 3700x should let you manually (not using XMP profiles) set the RAM to 3200mhz and 1.35volts

Also, don't get too hung up on the supported memory lists for motherboards, it just lists what they've actually tried in the motherboard themselves. This in no way means there's anything wrong with using your memory.

I'm running the same motherboard with a 3700x upgraded from a 1700. I also run 16gb 3866 8pack memory. The 1700 i managed get it to run at 3200 with decent timings after some fiddling manually. When i moved over to the 3700x it instantly booted at 3866 with xmp enabled, I manually changed it myself to 3600 to get the best infinty fabric speed and I've had no issues.

Think I'm going to hold of upgrading for now.

Going to see how fast and stable I can get my current RAM, then look into upgrading when the new range of CPU's come out.

As of right now if I was in your position I would set my heart on a 4000 series chip.

Day one purchase. It's not that far off and it's not like the 2700x is gonna be a massive bottleneck at the moment.

OK, considering you have an X370 mobo, if you have no plans to change the mobo then a 3700x is viable.

Completely up to you.

Option 1:
Hold off and get a B550 or X670 mobo + 4000 series chip

or

Option 2:
Keep mobo and get a 3600x or a 3700x

I would opt for option 2.

PCI-E 4 support plus new shiny chip.
