Just a quick question.

I've recently come into some money and want to upgrade my system a little, so thought it might be time to replace my single 5870.

What is my best option? I play at 1920*1200 and generally play most new games.

I have no aversion to red or green so suggest away. I'm guessing a good idea would be sticking another 5870 in there but honestly I would prefer to stay with a single card.

Cash wise I would like to stay under £4-500 and for that I would expect a decent boost in power.

TBH at that price range I really would wait for a couple of months and see what the 7000 brings to the table. It's not as if you have nothing to game with - the 5870 is still a decent card, and you'll be kicking yourself if you can get a much bigger performance jump for similar money a month or two after you've bought a new card.

At that res, the 5870 is still far more than capable. If you're desperate for an upgrade, you could pick up a 2nd 5870 for cheap which stacks up to at least 175% performance in most games, and would let you complete fps-wise with a 580. I think the ATI crossfire drivers and the application profiles are excellent these days :).

To be honest, that could probably tide you over til the 8000 series.

You'd be seriously missing a trick if you don't wait it out, It's not even the fact of you buying a new gen card, the price's of the new gen cards have a knock on effect. WAIT!
