Upgrading from the Ryzen1700x

Morning all,

I'm currently runing a Crosshair Vi (x370) with a 1700x, with a 1080GTx, 32GB ram (@3000Mhz), 256GB .M2 boot disk

I'm wanting to upgrade the CPU, I'm a heavy Photoshop user ( I'm an illustrator but also a gamer :) I dabble with 3D when required, so having a gazillion cores are nice, my deadlines are such things I render overnight so I reckon I can live with 6 cores or more.

Its needs to be a cheap upgrade to tide myself over for around 2 years, so next year's new Ryzen Socket/chipset, and DDR5 can mature one year before jumping in.

I have a Pre-order for 3080RTX I run an ultrawide 3840x1200 |(100HZ/30bit display)

Budget £400-500

Option 1 (cheapest)
3600x 6-core
(Keep Ram and Motherboard)

Option 2 (Modest)
3600x 6-core or maybe 3700x 8-core
32GB 3200Mhz CL14 8Pack Ram
(Keep crosshair VI)

Option 3
Blow the budget on a 3900x-12 core
(Keep Ram and Motherboard)

Not sure I need to upgrade the ram as well? trying to keep costs down and not wanting to move to the latest chipset, I know Ryzen 5000 will be good, I'm looking for a cost-efficient upgrade with the hardware I have.

I'd just drop in a 3600x (or xt if the price is right) and leave the mobo/ram.

Wait until Black Friday - I bet there will be some good deals about.

Aye, I'm on x370 , so not wanting to splash out just yet on chipset change so looking at Gen2 Ryzen's

I know AMD plan to update their socket next year, so not wanting to upgrade to the chipset to x570 because it's likely only to see one generation of CPU on it

i would drop either the 3600x or 3600 in and be done with it. that will be good enough especially wiht 3080. but if you can live wihtout the 3080 (CUDA) then maybe get the AMD 6800XT that is meant to be faster than 3080 and have much bigger VRAM which will be future proof as the games get bloaty as well as being CHEAPER by a lot based on current 3080 pricing.

The fastest gaming CPU your board supports is Ryzen 7 3800XT. Get that - it's £345.00 currently and try to overclock the RAM (the memory controller on Zen 2 is way better than your Zen 1).

I went from 1700x to 3600 to 3700x.

1700x to 3600 was a massive upgrade in all aspects. Going to the 3700x was silly I had no benefits from that upgrade.
I only game at 1440p 100hz.
I don't edit or capture video steam and so on..

If you photo and video edit the 3700x is a fantastic choice.

Thanks for the info, been trying to decide between the 3600 or 3700x,
I'm just trying to extend the life of my system without wasting money, I should probably just get the 3600 to tie me over to am5

no upgrade should ever be to tie you over, dont spend money with the intention of spending more latter.
if you are 100% going to AM5 stick with what you have until am5 his here in 12(ish) months.

i'm on a 1700 o/c and would not spend any money till am5 ,,, why bother your not going to get it back ..
just cancel your 3080 and problem solved

Im also on a 1700x Zen1 and was considering a straight swap to a used 3700x when the new CPUs come out. However this is a 50% performance gain which isnt very big.

Compare to the GPU upgrade - going from my RX480 to a 6800xt is going to be over 400% improvement.

I would have to go 3900x to get a 200% improvement over my 1700x.

Zen2 over zen1 should be more than 50%. I think it is around 80%. But that’s fairly standard. It depends what you trying to achieve in terms of end goal.

are you looking for productivity weighed increase or gaming. If latter then the GPU investment would be far noticeable than CPU. For CPU you probably notice a bit of it in loading programmes and general responsiveness of windows. The responsiveness might well be the person’s endorphins running around in the body after putting a new CPU in.

for me the main benefit is power usage and efficiency. The zen2 over zen1 is a big step in terms of power efficiency (c-state and better power down management when idling) and the fact that for pretty much the same power output the zen2 can do much more.

I'm trying to work out if a 1700 will hold back a 6800xt compared to a 3600 or 3700x if nit stick with the 1700
