Hey,

I've been looking at upgrading from my current stock hard drive in my Macbook Pro (early 2008) to a 320GB WD 7200rpm hard drive. The problem is, I don't want to void my warranty.

I rang my local authorised centre (not Apple store because they said they won't do it ) and they've quoted £149 for an "Apple" hard drive. Apparently using any other kind will void the warranty.

Anyone know if this is true or if they are just feeding me rubbish?

Doubling the price for a hard drive with an Apple sticker on it is ridiculous.

On the actual decision of fitting that drive, you might be interested to read here: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17946481

AS for the warranty, I've had mixed responses - some saying warranty stays sound, some saying the contrary.

Also told that Apple now only fit the WD unit when asked for a 320gb drive.

Authorised Apple repair centre quoted me about £80 to fit a supplied WD unit(circa £70), so that price above is about right.

Now in the process of fitting a Seagate unit which eliminates my previous symptoms, though others have fitted WD units trouble free.

They say it has to be an authorised Apple drive in order to not void the warranty. I wouldn't mind paying £25 to get it fitted as long as I can use my own hard drive. Paying £150 then the £25 to have it fitted is a complete waste of money.

There's loads of tutorials but I really don't want to void the warranty.

Now fitted a Seagate 320gb.

Although the symptoms are greatly reduced, there is still excess noise. Fan speed seems erratic too.

Could this just be the nature of 7200 drives? I surely can rule out installation probs.

Think I may have to live with this
