I'm going to upgrade my motherboard as I think it is giving me issues. Currently have an ASUS M4A78 and am thinking of going for a
Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 AMD 990X (go for UD5 or UD7??)
Corsair Vengeance Blue 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz

I'm not sure what case to go for and what PSU I need. Do I need any extension cables?

I'm considering the
Antec P280 Super Midi Tower Case - Gun Metal Black [0-761345-82000-4]
but have no real idea on a compatible PSU and how powerful it should be. Current case has 500W PSU but may be under powered.

The other components are
AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1090T
Corsair DDR2-800 (not compatible so replacing)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti
3*SATA drives
Windows 7 64 bit
TSSTcorpCD/DVDW
ASUS Axe Square fan (not fitted yet as I can't get it in the case and connect the power to the MB!)

Maybe:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 AMD 990X (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard £129.98
1 x Antec TruePower New Modular 650W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £72.98
1 x Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9D3X2K2/8GX) £41.99
Total : £256.36 (includes shipping : £9.50).

That PSU is more than capable, you could drop it down if you prefer. I left a case out, as everyone likes different ones! But that should all fit in the case you suggested if you like it.

I do some gaming but not a great deal, I want to be able to run SETI again and currently waiting to start Batman Arkham City. Mostly browsers, music, spreadsheets and development (currently .NET).

Thanks for the suggestion. I wasn't sure on the power but I guess 650W should be enough and should be compatible with the Antec P280 Super Midi Tower Cas.

Some people won't like me saying this, but you could probably afford an i5 2500K. Which is generally considered the gaming CPU of choice. Unless you need the extra cores of course. Well even then this suggest it's better anyway:

If you don't need SLI support then:

YOUR BASKET

1 x Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £84.98
1 x Antec TruePower New Modular 650W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £72.98
1 x Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9D3X2K2/8GX) £41.99
Total : £385.34 (includes shipping : £9.50).

Allow selling your current stuff to fund a new case.
Would be a nice upgrade!

The other thing to note is, you may be able to fix any issues you are having and save £400 :P People on these forums are very knowledgeable and someone will be able to help I'm sure.
