Hey guys.

That time has come again to replace my old trusty 7950 as it is slowing down a little and need some advice on upgrades.

I have been looking at the RX480's and GTX1060 but I am unsure as to which is currently seen as better and if so, which particular ones?

My budget is keen to stay south of the £300 mark.

Thanks

Very little between them IMO, there is something about the 480 I quite like though and if I was buying then the xfx 480 gtr looks quite nice

Thanks for the reply old_gamer.

I don't pretend for one minute to be up-to-date with components, but is there any particular reason why benchmarks have the 1060's ahead?

Additionally, would

that be the weapon of choice over the cheaper versions?

Thanks again.

The 1060 is slightly ahead, i believe the 480 is slightly cheaper on average though, if ya take the MSI gaming version of each model the 480 is 30-40 cheaper i think, so a little less performance would be expected. In some games i would bet the 480 beats the 1060 though, it can all change with drivers and new games, APIs etc as it has in the past.

It really depends on the games tested. Some favour Nvidia heavily, some favour AMD. That's why it's always best to look up benchmarks for the games that you want to play, then make a decision based on those. Of course, nobody can predict the future and what upcoming games will run best on.

That and the MSI Gaming X are the best 480s based on everything I've read.

Unless you plan on replacing it every year or so I'd go 8gb 480 as I believe it will age better than a 1060, From the 480's the XFX GTR appears to be the best available. From what I've read they've managed to design a card that uses less voltage than other 480 cards improving thermals & clocks etc.

At under £300 is the Fury not an option?

its a good option and i have one myself and have no problems with it but there is a niggling doubt in the back of my mind if 4gb of ram is enough for todays graphics cards, but this could just be me over thinking it

Thanks for the responses guys. I am more than likely going for the XFX RX.

As a little side question, do you think my lack of GPU power would be contributing to bottle-necking my CPU? As I said, I am currently using a 7950 and I have an I5-4670k @ 4Ghz and when playing certain games such as Overwatch, my CPU is maxing itself out.

I have an i5 6600k at 4.6 and 2x 970s and I still get overwatch maxing my CPU.

I'm exactly the same, although it does a great job at 1440, apparently hb handles it differently, but I'm not sure. Benchmarks show it quite a bit better than the 1060/480.

I dunno if overwatch is just a CPU heavy game, i assume it is if Aiir is getting 100% with a 4.6 overclock, you could increase your overclock a little though, 4ghz is very conservative unless your using the stock cooler.

Second hand 980ti
I'm sure some would agree with me here when I say a second hand 980ti with a decent price would be a fine thing to get.... I'm considering buying a second 970 and trying out sli if it doesn't go to plan I can stick it in my lads machine ince I get some cash together for a ti or 1070
