Hello everyone!

I'm looking at getting a new CPU in the next 2 weeks, I was looking at the following 2 options below. I have a budget of £150. My primary use will be for gaming.

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/amd-...hics-4-cpu-8-gpu-compute-cores-cp-396-am.html

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/amd-...ghz-turbo-socket-am3-processor-cp-360-am.html

Just a few questions i have.

1) will either of these be a direct fit to my current set up?
2) which one of these 2 would be the better options?
3) are there any better cpu's I should be looking at for my price range?

My current setup:

Processor: AMD Athlon X4-860K CPU, 4 Cores, 3.7 - 4GHz
Graphics Card: GTX 1050 Ti 4GB
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-F2A68HM-HD2
Memory: 8 GB DDR3 1600 MHz
Power Supply: Aerocool 80 PLUS 500W PSU

Any help will be much appreciated!

2nd one won't work as it's a different socket.

1st one doesn't represent very good value, for example you can get the following for under a 100:

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/amd-...4-cpu-8-gpu-compute-cores-reta-cp-387-am.html

which is the same exact chip (I think), clocked 200MHz lower

unfortunately, neither would provide you with much in terms of any noticeable increase in performance.... I think your money would be better saved towards a motherboard+CPU change. (even if this means a delay)

if you can save a bit more up, the following comes in at around 200 (mainly due to needing DDR4 as well as mobo + CPU!)

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £210.43
(includes shipping: £10.50)

in the following comparison, I've used the most architecturally similar chip in the list that I could find (skylake i3, like this pentium are 2 core/ 4 thread chips, the 940k is a refresh of the 840, whcih is a lower clocked version of your chip)

I could add a little extra to the budget yes, I just realised I most likely need a new motherboard too, could you spec me anything better for 250?

If you can stretch to reach the Ryzen 1400 then that'll be a solid upgrade + loads of room for future upgrades. I've heard issues with the G4560 not being as smooth as the benchmarks suggest. However the cheapest setup is £330.

Could you link me please? will i need to purchase ram also? if so, could you link me to some 8gb ram too?

AMD's Ryzen has disrupted the market and is generally much better value for money. If you can wait a little while longer Ryzen 3 will be released later this year to compete with Intels Pentium and i3 chips and will probably give you much more for your money. As others have said if you have to get a new system now, the Pentium G4560 is probably the best for your money right now.

The best thing about going with a Ryzen system is that all the CPUs, cheapest to most expensive, all use the same CPU socket and will do for at least the next 3 years, so if you have extra money or want an upgrade in future you should be able to update the BIOS and drop the new CPU in, with an Intel system its almost certain you would need to upgrade both the CPU and motherboard.

This is a bit of a rush job but should give you some ideas where to start. If you want to go down the Ryzen route I suggest opening a "spec me" thread in General Hardware and someone more knowledgeable can help with the motherboard and/or ram.
