Think it's about time i upgraded my Phenom II 965. I'm generally enquiring as to whether i can get a decent upgrade by remaining on the same socket, if not, is it best i just moved over to an i5 Sandybridge setup?

Either OC it (should do 3.8-4GHz no fuss), or it's time to move platforms.

It depends what you use the chip for tbh. If it's just gaming and general net browsing, there is no point upgrading as SB i5 will perform to around the same level as your chip.

As HeX said, Overclocking it may extend it's lifespan somewhat.

Just gaming and web browsing like you mentioned, but my friend who plays Battlefield: 3 on an i7 2600k at 4.5GHz with a 6800 series GPU can play it better than my computer which runs an AMD Phenom II X4 965 and a 7970, so i'm blaming my CPU currently as i can't figure out what else could be the problem.

Dunno why you are having problems with BF3.

I run BF3 1080p All High (couple of settings on Ultra), and it's smooth as a babies behind :|

And I only have a 560Ti.

You're 7970 should tear it to bits maxed out.

That's what i thought, but i'm getting the same FPS as i did on my 5870, which is 35-25 FPS on maps like Caspian Border.

I would look at CPU utilisation using the Task Manager and GPU utilisation using MSI Afterburner when playing the game.

What motherboard do you have and is the CPU running at full speed??

Yeah, i turned C&Q off, turned auto fan off etc and the CPU hit's 100% which causes my whole system to lockup and i have to hit the reset button, the GPU doesn't hit near 100% usage.

Also, i'm seeing performance dips in other games as well like Star Wars: The Old Republic, Mass Effect 1, and the only way to rectify it is to restart my computer.

System Specs:
-Corsair HX 1000W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-1000HXUK).
-AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 965 Black Edition "125W Edition" 3.40GHz (Socket AM3).
-Antec 1200 Twelve Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case - Black.
-Corsair Dominator XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 16000C9D Twin3X (TW3X4G1600C9D) - Now 8GB.
-Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H AMD 890GX (Socket AM3) DDR3 Motherboard.
-Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium - Retail (GFC-00025).
-Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (WD1002FAEX).
-Corsair Hydro H50-1 High-Performance Liquid CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775/1155/1156/1366/AM2/AM3).
-LG GH24NS70 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black).
-Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound (3.5g).
-AMD/ATi Gigabyte 7970.

Hmmm, just looking at this, and it might be your Quad is limiting you.

I'm on an X6 and they seem to perform a fair bit better on large MP servers.

So it looks like you either need to grab a cheap X6, or change platform :(

However, saying that, they are still getting way higher FPS than you are reporting.

EDIT: SWTOR and ME1 should seriously have no trouble playing maxed out. I played ME1 maxed out on a dual core and a 5770! Sounds like you've got a problem somewhere.

Oh i know, i've played it fine on this system before with a 5870. What happens, is i'm playing SW:TOR and ME:1 at 60 FPS [not at the same time], then overtime my performance drops and my CPU hits 100% usage.

I'm hoping i don't have to do an OS reinstall.

SWTOR and ME1 should not be having any issues. I assume you are running the games at 1920X1080??

It sounds like something is baulked in your system.

I would give this is a try:

1.)Install your existing copy of Win7 again to another hard drive partition. You can use the copy for a while without registering.
2.)Boot to this install.
3.)Install the minimum drivers required to run the game and only the software required to run it.
4.)See if you see the same issues with the minimal install.

No, 1600x900 which means something is seriously wrong in my system, so i will try what you mentioned, and see if it works or not and post in this thread again.

My overclocked HD5850 1GB and a Core i3 2100 runs GPU heavy games like Metro2033 and Crysis2 fine at very high settings under DX11 at 1680X1050. ME1 and ME2 were fine at 1680X1050 with my overclocked HD4830 and a Q6600.

Complete waste of money. An X6 is no upgrade, and seems to be retailing close to £200...

Complete joke!

I wouldn't bother upgrading tbh.

Well, i decided to do a full system scan incase any viruses were the cause of it, found nothing, so i decided to load factory settings on my bios, now for some reason that seems to have fixed the problem as far as i can see, it was only yesterday so things can change, but for now all my games apart from one appear to be running fine [that one game is a GPU problem].

I'm still tempted to do what CAT-THE-FIFTH mentioned though, couldn't hurt.

I said 'a cheap X6', as in grab one from the MM. There's a 1090T on there now for £90. ;)

I also said he really shouldn't be having those problems with a 965 anyway, and that it sounds more like a system problem.

Dude upgrade to an i5 2500K. I had a phenom @4.1 had the same results as you. Now its butter smooth at 1080 on ultra with x2 AA. the differnce is amazing

If there is a problem somewhere on his system - which seems to be the case - then the only thing that advice is going to be good for is wasting money. Besides which, a platform shift from his 965 to a 2500K wouldn't be worth the outlay for what he uses the system for - already established.

Your advice is akin to telling someone to buy a new car when their wipers need renewing.
