Hi there, I've decided to upgrade my PC from my i5-2500k and AMD 7950 as it doesn't deliver the performance I would like in the games released in the last few months. I am looking for a new processor, motherboard, graphics card and a 500Gb SSD. Whilst I've done some research on the newer i5 models and the GTX 970 I'm just not sure which components are the best value for money at the moment. My budget is £700 at the absolute maximum and I would greatly appreciate some help in deciding what is best, cheers.

You're going to struggle there, the 970 and 500GB SSD is already eating a good portion of that. A new graphics card and SSD, then overclocking your CPU should give you a nice big performance boost.

there's no point at all in upgrading to a newer i5. just overclock the knackers off it if you aren't already doing so. if you really want a CPU upgrade, i'd look out for a 2nd hand i7 ivy/sandy that you can drop into your existing motherboard.

the best bang for your buck will come from spending more money on a new GPU.

I've got my i5-2500K clocked at 4.6Ghz, so maybe I can keep it for a while longer. Considering I've had it since January 2011 I've got great value out of it to say the least. So which GTX 970 and SSD do you think I should go for?

That cpu will last for a couple more years at least I reckon.

Do you value performance over price in an SSD?

As for the 970, I don't think there's much to separate them if you're not going SLI.

Mine was chosen for it's size and price. It overclocks as well as most of the bigger cards and runs quiet but hot in my small case. No coil whine.

Maybe someone can prove me wrong but I don't see the more expensive cards really being worth an extra £80 in some cases.
