Was thinking of an i5/i7 processor but still not sure which one but want to try future proof as much as possible. I have a wd caviar black 2b hdd which is sata6gbs.
I have crucial basllistix ddr3 10600 4 x2gb.
I went for 850w psu because that is what I have at the moment.

I dont know the make of psu (I am in a wheelchair with limited movement so can only look when I have someone here - sorry.) but I have been having startup problems so thought I'd update and renew the internals.
I am running 2x 260 sli gpu's does that make a difference? My periphals all use usb. My pc was originally built by mesh.
What is a modular psu?

which heatsink and fan would you recommend - I need an easy application but good cooling. My house is kept warm so I dont get cold as I dont move.
What else do I need to upgrade/update - graphics card can come later. I assume the ones Ihave will just slot in like before.

I have no idea about pc internals but have learnt a lot today thank you.
this is not final yet but do I need anything else or have you any other suggeestions? I will look at that motherboard now.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-2600K 3.40GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £239.99

1 x Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound (3.5g) £8.99
Total : £546.54 (includes shipping : £10.50).

That psu looks good too, I am completely dumbstruck by it all - it seems like too much choice. I take it the xfx has allcables I need,, I didnt reaise hdd,gpu allhad their own power supply I thought they were powered by connectors to motherboard.
A bit confused by all of this but getting there.
Thakyou all for your help.

I have just measured my case and the gelid cooler will be too high, is there another slimmer one?
How do water coolers work? where does the radiator go? It is just a thought.

I have kept the stock item for now just to get it running but will change soon I think. Any ideas what my cpu temp should be:an i7 2700 3.5 chip? The msi board will overclock if I want but shouild I run it standard for a bit?

I have run intelburn test and each core maxes at 85 deg, the package at 98 deg. I have no thermal paste but I think Ihave toget a better cooler.
burn test said it was all stable.
