Upgrading old mesh pc

You're right was a little sparse on the old information.

The monitor I have looks lovely @ 1080p - albeit with the graphics options down quite a way. I need the higher resolution for workspace as I make music with the thing as well (nice to have more space on the desktop).

Games I play - in the last month, Insurgency, Chivalry, Planetary Annihilation, Rocket League. All run fine, just fed up of looking at low end graphics. I love racing games but haven't been able to bring myself to play any on this machine yet, simply because I know they'll look so poor.

I've got an old spare PC with a Phenom X4 955 and a GTX560.

I'm intending to use it as a TV machine for multimedia and playing the odd game, and It runs games pretty well. At 1080p it runs GRID 2 at very playable frame rates with high detail and it looks awesome on the big TV.

I'm not sure how well it'd run more demanding recent games, but for many games it's fine. I'm sure a 955 with a 960 would run games even better.

If this was me I'd just upgrade the GPU to a dx11(actually did that before to a 6670, great card) and upgrade the psu to something better and get a cheap 1tb hdd, mostly the other 2..

I used to game and movie watch on an am2 dual core Athlon, socket 754 with single core, 939 single/dual core, pentium D within the last year all with 2-4gb ram, nothing fancy psu and either a 8400gs, hd2400, 8500gt, 8800gt, 9600gt, 210, 6670 plus other older ati cards..

Basically it if plays games and does what you want to an extent then don't waste money upgrading to fancy stuff, I had vista and 7 on the machines..

So upgrade the graphics :).

Oh and gtx 750 is a good card for a port powered only card.

I think the 750ti was a great card for it's time, mainly due to adaptive V sync allowing it to play BF4 at a fixed 30fps, and the fact that it required so little power, it's a 60w card running from a PCI-E slot, more than capable of playing many games if your frugal with settings.

But these days and with your PSU there are more value for money options, the 950 or 960, the AMD 370 or 380.

I think a 4gb card is a better option than a 2gb, it may well offer more in some games, and I think the 370 offers a little more than the 950.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £270.48
(includes shipping: £10.50)

IMO you are flogging a dead horse and need a new pc.

But...buy the best GPU and SSD you can afford then upgrade your platform when you're ready.

750/950 are dead in the water IMO and would need replacing at platfrom upgrade time anyway.

Hence why i said they're pants, but some people seem to think we only think about highest graphics with all the bells and whistles

Right all, thanks for the advice.

Started a mini war re old vs new gpus.

I'll probably upgrade the rest of the system at some point but really at the moment thats not financially viable. Maybe after Christmas.

How much of a future can I expect from a 370? Is it worth just going for the 380 for a couple of months so that I can bring everything up the standard (mobo cpu etc) and have something a little better?

Lol. See the contradiction?

Hence why some things should be taken with a large dose of salt.

Any one of you care to show me what other cards perform at those price points? Or is it not a case of many more expensive GPU's actually not delivering enough above those price points to justify the cost?

If all I played was Minecraft, Unturned, Terraria, Sims, on a 1080p monitor, why would a 750ti be pants? What would be wrong with a 950?

Especially if I was short on money?

I would rather have the OP's old system with a card at around £100 for getting into indie games than spend more than I need and leave nothing in my pocket.

That way, in the long run I end up with a years experience of PC use and a game collection that justifies a new PC. And will be more able to explore my own opinions based on what I have experienced instead of relying on opinionated misinformation that may lead to me wasting money on hardware I will not fully utilise.

I hate it when mum and dad fight like this.

Seriously though - I'm really stuck as to what to do. In a years time, I will definitely be able to afford a proper system, and I'll swing by here for someone to help me drop a grand with the rights parts and stuff.

For now I'm going to go with a cheap enough option so that I don't have to cry next time I look at my bank balance.

Thanks for the help from everyone, although there is some difference in advice, it has helped a great deal. Cheers
