Hi all
I will shortly be hoping to upgrade to a AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6000+ 3.00GHz (Socket AM2) -, I am currently running an Athlon 64 X2 4200+. Is it just a case of removing the old processor and plugging the new one in? Is there anything I should be aware of that may cause problems? I know these sound silly questions but want to get it right!

Thanks for the help

What motherboard do you have? You may be able to just plug the new one in but it's always best to check on your motherboard manfacturers website who should have a list of compability CPU's for the motherboard.

Been googling, and some places seem to say it will be okay but you may need a BIOS flash, which could prove an issue if it's an HP machine (not sure if yours is). Couldn't find any other info on that board unfortunately, and whether the chip will work in it. A direct e-mail to Asus might be the best option.

P.S Bios Flash????
Kinda like upgrading your motherboards software, just a little more complex and if it goes wrong (normally doesn't) the motherboard would be dead. For the price you are paying for the Athlon XP 6000+ however, you could make a switch to Core 2, and although getting a less performing chip than your 4200+ by a little way, you would be set better for upgrading later on. Something like

Would be nice for you. Your RAM is already DDR2 from the AMD machine, so you can just switch that straight over and if needed sell your old parts to get some money back. If you were strongly set on the 6000+ however, I'm not sure what to advise as I would prefer to say keep your current motherboard and upgrade the chip bit without knowing if that chip will work, and you being a little bit confused by flashing a BIOS it might not turn out great.

LOL thats the truth bit confused. I am looking for advice so I am willing to listen options. I am looking to upgrade the speed so would there be a better option? also excuse the stupid question but I take it that the core 2 is compatible with my MB?

The Core 2 duo is completly different, because we can't say for sure your motherboard can take the CPU upgrade.
To be on the "safe side" fibby has added the motherboard and Intel Core 2 Duo cpu, this processor can overclock quite high which will beat your current system and even possibly the AMD 6000.

Hope the above helps

I would make sure your case can take an ATX motherboard. It may well only take micro-ATX.

Have a look at your current motherboard, if it looks similar to A4 size piece of paper then you got ATX, if its half the size and square then you got MATX.

sometimes OEM's use propietary cases/power supplies so a motherboard swap might not be possible. have a look on hp's website and see if they provide a new bios for the 6000+, a new bios might not even have to be put on though. if hp dont have a cpu compatibility list at all, it might not/probably wont work.

So i think then from what I have found out on the internet and from you I will be better off building a new system inside a new case? keeping my hard drive and ram and GPU for the time being and putting it all together in a nice new home! Sounds easy but reality is gonna be a bit different i imagine! Any thoughts?

Just leave it alone. The increase in performance you'll get will be a huge disappointment. Your system is already pretty decent. Save up and buy a new motherboard and CPU next year when the new Intel CPU's come out.
