Now I've read the FAQ regarding the upgrade and I'm sure I can manage the actual upgrade itself. However I've seen some people say they've successfully backed up their PSN Game downloads prior to this.

How's it done? Afaik the PS3 Backup facility doesn't back them up? Is that correct?

The backup utility backs up everything - saved games, downloaded content, anything in music & video folder etc.

Can I just check that you shouldnt backup to the drive you are expecting to use right? :p

And the external drive (Im using an temp enclosure with a 500Gb AAKS) needs to be partitioned with FAT32? Can there be data on there already?

Hoe long does the actual backup/reinstall take? Wondering if I can do it tonight...

Don't backup to the drive you will be using as you won't be able to restore it.

Drive needs to be FAT32. Don't see why data should matter but probably better clean.

Mine took about 30mins for 30gb of Data. Each way.

Word of warning, when your taking out the internal HDD. Watch the screws, they are super tight and so easy to wear the thread out.

Cheers mate - Ive got a few watchmaker size phillips screwdrivers so will take my time...

Might be best if I do it in the morning perhaps :p

I used precision screwdivers too and found they were so hard to turn i had to get pliers on the screwdriver to turn it while applying pressure to the top of the screwdriver too.

Anyone know how I format a 500Gb HD in XP to FAT32  - that disk management refuses to give me an option. The drive in question is in a USB enclosure though...

I actually had to use pliers to get my bloody screw out as the thread on the screw went.

OMFG Im annoyed - 2hrs after trying the format it finished with the message 'This partition is too big for FAT32'

Started the Windle fix which Im hoping will work - want bed :(...

OK got it done in the end (finished at 4am :/) and now backing up the PS3.

Am I right in thinking I need to do just 2 things:

1) Use Settings > System Settings > Backup Utility to backup to external HDD
2) Ensure my trphies are synced by going to Game > Trophies while signed into PSN

Is there anything else? Just making sure the vids/photos and save games Ive made are definitely backed up...

TIA

Sounds about right. :)

Am I right in thinking a brand new PS3 drive will be totally blank before the first use?

Going to stick my 200GB 7200RPM laptop drive into my PS3 when I buy one soon, but have no means of backing up.

You won't need to backup the drive if the PS3 is brand new. Just pop the new drive in before you even turn the PS3 on for the first time and the PS3 will auto format and setup etc.

Just trying to do this and that screw just wont move . Trying not to damage the head - must have put that glue in to hold it tight...

SOK guys - ended up using an electric screwdriver - was like a hot knife through butter :)

Got to go - FIFA 09 has dropped through my door - 1hr to back up then play!!!

wouldnt you need to obtain the firmware first and put it on a memory stick or similar? I had to when I swapped mine over, cue a frantick scramble looking for a memory stick big enough lol
