I'll give it a try when I buy it. If it doesn't work, I'll pop the old drive back in. Can the firmware be downloaded through a PC to a USB pen drive? I do have a 4GB pen drive.

yeah available from the official playstation site, just download it slap it in a folder called UPDATE (all uppercase) and put that folder in one called PS3 (all uppercase again) plug it in and turn on will ask you to format the disk, then will search for the firmware and install

Upgraded mine this week to help with my other purchase of PlayTV, brought This one and the backup, upgrade and restore went perfectly, this thread made me realise how easy it was :cool:

I did mine just after getting it, swapped out my 40Gb drive and put in a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 320GB 5400RPM drive and it is one of the best mods I have ever done.

Best way I found out to do it was watching a video on YouTube ... there are loads on there and show how to complete it in 2-3 minutes, the only bother I had was getting the firmware loaded onto the new drive from my usb pen drive .... took me a few attempts but I got there in the end.

I really wish Microsoft would have made their HDD enclosures easily upgradable on the 360 as Im running out of space fast

Little tip also is once you have taken out the 40/60/80Gb drive depending on which version of PS3 you have ... get a IcyBox 2.5" SATA drive enclosure (or any other brand of your choice) and use the drive as an external one ... I did this and is an excellent addition to my laptop when I'm on the move
