A mate of mine has dropped off his laptop for me to upgrade it from 1GB to 2GB. I've never done anything with a laptop before, is it just a case of taking the back cover off and slotting in the new RAM?

It depends.... If you''re lucky, the RAM slots will be under a dedicated cover on the back so that will be all you need to remove. If you're really unlucky, they're under the keyboard and that usually means taking off the entire back cover then removing the keyboard screws and prising the keyboard out. If it looks like you'll need to do this I suggest you decline the job. Once you've got access to the slots, it's much like any other PC. You'll probably have to remove two 512MB SODIMMs to insert two 1GBs.

What model of laptop is it?
As said above it'll usually just be on the underside of the laptop from an easy access hatch. When it's like this I find it easier to replace laptop memory than desktop, click out, click in...
You could find both under the keyboard or one on the bottom and one under the keyboard. Not the end of the world though, depends how easy the keyboard comes off...
Unless you're comfortable taking laptops apart, I'd agree with the above to leave it should you have to rake under the keyboard...

Right, eventually got the cover off after much swearing! Right, got photos of the RAM modules, how the hell does this work then?

thats two dimm slots, they are stacked, remove the existing dimm by using the two levers at either ends, it will raise up slightly and allow it to be pulled out, should then be fairly simple to figure out where the new one goes!

connector shouldnt be the only thing holding it in, it certanly isnt on all the laptops ive ever worked with (and im a IBM engineer), if youve broken one side then you have used too much force, if things dont move/give then they shouldnt be stressed as they will snap...

Glad that's not my laptop. You didn't need to 'lever' anything there as you already had a free slot. Offer up the new ram at a 30 degree angle into the top slot and when the contacts look to be in about the same depth as the stick that's already in there push down on the back edge of the new stick so as the 2 spring clips latch onto it.
As it's a laptop and likely on the move it's going to be a safe bet the stick with only one clip is gonna work loose.
And the correct method to remove a module is to spread both spring clips at the same time a few mm sideways allowing the rear of the ram to pop up at 30 degrees again.
