Upgrading Squier Strat pickups?

True :)

I was looking at the Fender Lace pickups last night with a bit of interest, as Thomann do them pretty cheap.

If I was going for Fender Lace pickups is it best to take a combination of 3 different colour ones? I was thinking gold, silver, blue. Are there any recommended combinations and positionings for them?

Thanks :)

The Fender Strat plus deluxe used to come with a combination of Lace sensors in the mid '90s.

Red at the bridge, sliver in the middle, and blue in the neck position. They were wonderful guitars. I tried to buy one a few years ago, but there weren't many about.

*EMG's, EMG's, EMG's............"

81 and 85, 81 and 60, 81 and 81......... the possibilities are endless!

EMG's have always looked a bit expensive to me, but I'll bear them in mind!

I'm a bit wary about the red Fender Lace pickup - it's got great reviews and it's got not-so-great reviews!

I'm off into Nottingham now to see a friend so I'll drag him into some guitar shops if we go by any! :D

I can't imagine having EMGs in a Strat. If you want a Strat tone, then the Lace pickups will litterly blow them out of the water. :)

David Gilmour made his signature "post Roger Waters" era fender sound with EMGs, hence the EMG DG-20 (David Gilmour 20) single coil active + mid range boost set...

Sorry, I should have said "I can't imagine having EMG 80/60 series pickups in a Strat." I just don't feel that they 'should' be put in a Strat. That's only my opinion obviously, but I think that Lace Sensors are the nicest pickups I've ever heard in a Strat.

Right I've been thinking about this combination:

Neck: Blue Fender Lace
Middle: Gold Fender Lace
Bridge: Red Fender Lace

Looking for quite a crunchy sound on the bridge, but also a nice clean strat sound. (I'd like a variety of sounds) Am I better off putting the gold lace pickup in the neck position for the clean strat tones?

Thanks :)

Luckily the Lace pickups are highly versatile, you'll be getting fantastic tones. Both distorted and clean.

With regards to the positioning of the gold pickup, I personally would have it in the neck position. It gives that classic Clapton Strat tone which is just like heroin for your ears, seriously.

Haha :D

I've heard lots of varying positions, because like you say (apparantly) they are very versatile. A lot of people say put the Red one in the bridge for the thick, almost humbucking-like tones but it's the other 2 I'm looking at. I wanted the Gold for the Clapton-like tones like you say, and the blue ones get a lot of good reviews. Although I don't really know how I'll choose between blue and silver as they both look very enticing.

Gold in the neck position is tempting . . . aargh the choices! :D

the guy who plays in the band im in, owns a strat from 73, it looks absolutely superb, and the sound is outstanding on it he took it to a shop for a setup, and they offered him 3500 on the spot, he declined :) ill try and get pictures.

similar to walter trouts in looks.
