I am with Plusnet FTTC, the supplied routers wifi is quite weak so decided to upgrade it.

I went into a store in town today to purchase a replacement router, they said I need an ADSL router as it was copper at the house.

So came home with a Netgear DGN2200. Set it up put in my username and password but wouldn't connect, rang Plusnet and they advised it's the wrong router as I need a Fibre or VDSL enabled router. Both are persistant they are right.

Who is right, do I need an ADSL or Fibre router?

If I end up taking this back and do indeed need a fibre router, I plan to get a TP Link WDR3600 N600 router for the same price.

Should be ok yes, You will have to use your open reach modem and connect that to the TP link VIA its WAN port and put your plusnet username and password in the tp link.
