ok.. ive got my dads old pc here on 2000 proffesional..

i have a XP home Oem full version disc here, but i also have an xp pro upgrade disc somewhere in the house..

is it possible using the oem full version to upgrade to xp with a new install (deleting all settings and files etc) but without loosing all the drivers and software for critical things and without ending up with 2 installs on the same drive?

Firstly you have a legal issue with the licence and the fact that you can't use the OEM licence and you can only use the upgrade if you don't have installed on any other PC.

That aside you have a decision. It's really all or nothing for the settings. You can save them all with an upgrade or lose everything. There's no real middle ground. If you need a stable machine, I'd suggest doing a fresh install, although it depend what's installed on the machine etc.

legal issues can be overcome.. the fact that i dont have any of the drivers for the laptop is the problem

JUst take a note of the drivers and find them on the 'net. There are programs to backup drivers, but why not look if you can find updated ones?
