Current system in sig and i am going to upgrade the following.

OcUK GeForce 7800GT 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-032-OK) £187.94
Corsair 2GB DDR XMS4000PT TwinX (2x1GB) CAS3 (MY-094-CS) £152.69
DFI LanParty UT NF4 Ultra-D (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-014-DF) £93.94
Hiper HPU-4K580-MK Type R 580W Modular ATX2.2 PSU - Black UV (CA-005-HP) £62.22

I just need to know, do i need some thermal paste for transfering my processor to the new board? AND is it easily done?

Thanks in advance for replies

Get some as5,

yes its easy enough to swap over the cpu, but are you using the original or a replacement heat sink fan?

Either way you should reapply the thermal compound (as5)

Reason i asked is if your using the original cooler it could have a thermal pad on the heatsink, this will need to be removed before you apply the new thermal paste ;)

All good but if you can stretch to £229.07 Including VAT the Connect3D ATI Radeon X1800 XT 256MB from OcUK is a much faster card.

First: whats happened to quick reply...

Second: im using the same HSF and it does have a thermal pad on the bottom.. how do i get it off???

Third: i will try as hard as i can to come up with the extra for the X1800XT.. as this was my first choice but im reaching the limit of my funds..

1. Quick reply has disappeared due to technical problems, there is a thread in GD about it.

2. Scrub most of it off then try using cleaning alcohol or similar to get the remainer off. Be careful to remove all traces of the alcohol before putting on the new thermal paste though.

3. You could go for Geil Value 2gb kit instead of the Crucial PC4000 and that will save you enough to get the X1800XT :)

would the geil value be as good though? i plan to get a 165 in the next 2 month or so and clock it to about 2.6. i suppose i could just use a divider?

Geil seems to be good for about 220 with a small voltage increase. If your going to try and clock a 165 to 2.6Gig, then you'll be needing a divider for your RAM anyway, so all that matters if how much memory bandwidth your after.

There are benchmark tests on the web that state running your RAM at 267Mhz (DDR534) instead of 200Mhz (DDR400) can give a performance increase of about 8 fps in some games such as HL2 and Doom3. All you need to ask yourself is whether this extra speed would be a requirement for you or not. For some people, they prefer to spend the extra cash on a better heatsink and clock the processor some more, whilst others prefer the tightest & fastest memory timings possible.

I would recommend you order a few days later, as tomorrow the 7900 releases, so you might want that instead of the 7800GT.

well thats all i can afford at the minute.. it should be a nice upgrade from my current spec lol :D:D:D:D

Definitely will be, you're going to make that FX 5900 look like a wimp :D and overclocking should be a dream with that new mobo
