Upgrading Xp to vista

If it's an upgrade disc, you can't boot it, AFAIK. However if you have set it to boot from CD Rom and you get a message saying, "Press any key to boot from CD...." press any key..There's no reason why it should not work.

I'll try again but it's a genuine vista dvd. When I installed it on my mates pc, the option of upgrade wasn't available as it was a new pc, therefore i just installed it fresh.

So you have a genuine copy of Vista which you are attempting to install on a second PC? Braking licensing there. It sounds like you have a "full" version rather than an upgrade, which should boot from DVD. Try booting into xp and then running the install process off the dvd, it does not sound like you can boot from cd/dvd.

Are you sure this is a gen copy?

Pretty sure you can boot from an Upgrade disk - I'm pretty sure I have done, when I got a new hard drive, I certainly didn't install XP first. I may have installed vista twice (first time without CD-Key) but I didn't install XP.

Bought from OcUK, the home basic 64 bit edition - OEM.

Hello fenderbass86, if you installed Windows Vista for the very first time on your friend’s machine, then you will have to go out and purchase a new license for Windows Vista if you want to run it on your machine. This is because, the OEM license states that you can change any system component in your system as many times as you wish apart from the motherboard and you will still be licensed. Now you may have to re-activate Windows Vista after a hardware and/or configuration change either by the online process or if it fails for various reasons, you will have to ring them up. If you do have to ring them up and speak with a Microsoft Agent, just tell them the truth, what exactly has happened and they will happily re-activate your copy of Windows for you. You will not be violating the EULA and you are still within your rights to use Windows Vista.

Now if you change your motherboard for a performance upgrade (We are not talking about replacing your motherboard under warranty), then I am afraid you will have to purchase a new copy of Windows Vista (License). :)
