Upgrading

Noooooooooooooo waste of money my friend.

It is a DX9 card, and for £40 more you could get a 8800 GTS which would be much better and DX10.

Depending on how much to spend, these are the cards you want for PCI-E:-

7600 GT (£100), 7900 GS (£110), x1950 Pro (£125), x1950 XT (£170), 8800 GTS (£290), 8800 GTX (£375).

What he says,i'd be spending the extra £40 & getting the 8800 ;)

Rob

Or spending £60 less and getting the x1950 XT. Although I went for the GTS :D

What is you budget, and what spec system would you be putting this card into?

Budget is around £250 but I don't think my PSU (550W) will support an 8800 and sadly I can't afford one that will.

I would like a 512MB card, some direct links to cards that would be suitable for my board would be appreciated.

Note, I have already decided against a 7950GT as every review I read they get trounced by other compared cards.

7900 GTX?

Y'see, I don't really know. I mostly play FPS games like Far Cry, Doom 3, HL2 and so on, my current card will run them fairly decent but I want a card where I can crank up the settings to max and have no lag, or as little as possible. I can only go on what other people tell me is good, so I am really interested in what people have to say.

What make is your PSU? If it is any good, chances are it will be fine.

What resolution do you game at? Because if its 1280 x 1024 or lower, then you'll probably not need the 512MB anyway. I'd say an x1950XT, unless you go for the 8800 GTS of course :D

For GTS fun:- http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-036-BG

For some change from £200:- http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-063-CO

Yes if you game at 1280x 1024 or lower than a 256MB card will be indestinguishable from a 512MB card.

The X1950XT would be the best card to get in that case.

Exactly, and in that other thread everyone is saying ATi aint gona get trounced as they aint getting a next gen card out to compete with it till April, lmfao.

Gona be the same when Nvidia's mid range next gens come out to, as if this was posted then, and it was an x1950 XT, or an x1950pro being asked about it would be :-

It is a DX9 card, and for X amount more you could get a (mid range 8 series goes here) which would be much better and DX10.

Not trounced then eh, keep dreaming you guys. :D

Wait,

Don't got down the pub for a week.

Give up cigarettes for a week or two.

Sell your bottom down the local red light area.

But for the sake of £40 + a new power supply I'd wait a couple of weeks or month and get the GTS it may even come down in price in a month as well.

If you have to get a new gfx card say because your currnet one is broken, get a cheap one and then flog it on later.

I've just moved to the 8800 GTS and can attest is the best thing (apart from the GTX) which I felt was overkill. I'm not just on about DX10 features here either the increase in perfromance of DX9 games is jst huge compared to the rest of the cards out there.

Well, just my two pennies worth anyway.

Ok, thanks very much for the replies.

I have decided to go for the X1950XT, I could have got an 8800 as my budget went up by £100 last night, but I decided the games I have would probably not make best use out of it so I will get that card for christmas instead.

Thanks.
