Hi one and all.

At present i have a stable overclocked rig which is a few years old now.
I am looking to update it and then reuse the other components to build another system for media, off line gaming and general use if its worth doing.

My main rig will be 98% gaming use. ( FPS style games)

What i have at present.

Intel 2500k cpu
Asus p8p67 pro mobo
Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz
Crucial 256GB M4 SSD
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 670 Windforce 3X
2x 360gb hybrids which are not fitted yet.
Several hdd

Im looking to change the cpu, mobo and memory but need to have some kind of performance increase to justify doing it.

what i have looked at so far

or
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-437-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=2574

and
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-470-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=567

Memory wise im unsure. Need 8gb with max budget £80-100

I am not to sure about the AMD route, I have several lower spec pc's at home which i have built but never a higher end one.
Would be interested in and advice on amd, pros over Intel not just price.

Need new shiny stuff!!!!!!!

I'm not sure you should bother with that upgrade.

Have you tried overclocking your 2500K at all? they all do like 4.5Ghz without fail if you spend £25-30 on a heatsink.

As for the D3HP it is currently coming with a free heatsink and I reviewed the board here - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18518312

You could spend less on parts for the new rig by getting an AMD APU setup maybe.

:D

Yes Stulid, its overclocked at present to a stable 4.4ghz, sorry i did not put that.

I have read your post on the mobo, just wondered if the msi would be better for gaming
I would use the components again to build the other rig. Im sure there are much cheaper options to build the second rig, but I still want it fastish.

I have aroung a £350-400 budget for new components.
from what i have read there is not much difference between a 2500k & i5-4670K.
But would a newer mobo and ram make any difference.

I dont have a clue about the AMD stuff, but would like some specs please.

The 3570K was around 8% faster clock vs clock than the 2500K, the 4670K carries on with this and is say 10% faster again clock vs clock than the 3570K.

So if you add this up the 4670K should be what? around 20% faster clock vs clock than a 2500K in CPU intensive tasks.

So there is some gain there.

Here is an Intel spec,

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £169.99
1 x Gigabyte Z87-D3HP Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £109.99
1 x TeamGroup Xtreem LV 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C10 2400MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit (TXD38G2400HC10QDC01) £71.99
Total : £362.77 (includes shipping : £9.00).

AMD don't really have anything to compete if you can afford the i5 4670K.

Thanks for your advice Stulid as always.

What are your thoughts on the MSI board, would it be better than the one you suggest, ie the "killer" E2200 Intelligent Networking Platform

Of course, I dont mind saving a few pounds if amd is upto the Intel spec.

I've always had great success with Gigabyte and there customer service.

Heres an AMD spec,

YOUR BASKET
1 x AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8320 Black Edition 3.50GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail £119.99
1 x Asus M5A99X EVO R2.0 AMD 990X (Socket AM3+) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £109.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Genesis 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9D3K2/8GX) £56.99
1 x Alpenföhn Matterhorn Pure Edition CPU Cooler £29.99
Total : £328.36 (includes shipping : £9.50).

You don't need such fast RAM for these chips.

The board supports SLI+Crossfire.

Team group one has a tad tighter timings but is using a tad more voltage. Wouldn't surprise me if those RAM modules were exactly the same without the heatsink.

The team group one has listed in its features -

Note Intel XMP1.3, compatible with series Intel 7 chipsets and higher.

Does this mean its no good for an I5 or just another feature if you had an I7 ????

It will run fine on an I5. If the motherboard doesn't automatically clock the RAM at its rated speed and instead does 1333, all you have to do is enter it manually and the vast majority of RAM will work.

A good lot of people on this forum are running team group paired with a variety of Haswell CPUs.
