Just a quick question chaps. I've got an uplighter/standing lamp which has no on/off switch, just a dimmer slider box which sits on the floor. It's difficult to reach over the tv to switch it off at the mains, so I'm wondering if bringing the slider right down so there's no perceivable illumination is the same as off and not running any electricity?

I’d use a smart plug for that

That seems good. I just looked it up and it can be controlled from my android phone? That would be extremely handy. Can you recommend a good 'cheap' one? I've got an old adapter plug in my bedroom that a 4 way gang mains board is connected to and it turns power off to my tv and other devices by using a remote control, but doesn't work anymore. A smart plug could replace that.

I'm in a similar situation and have literally 10's of these connected to all lamps in the house. All controlled via Alexa.

TP Link tapo currently on offer on Amazon will work with Alexa/google home etc as well I have all my side lights on voice control and timers it is brilliant.

Thanks guys. On my google home on my phone, I've just got my bedroom tv setup so I can mirror the phone. With one TP Link tapo smart plug in the bedroom and the other in the front room, how would I set them up, or would they get automatically seen by the phone once I open google home?

TP Link have an App called Tapo which works fine, or Google Home should find them. There are instructions on the TP Link website.

@Merlin5 no bother, they're really handy as others have stated, I use TP links myself and have them working with alexa.

As a confirmatory note, each plug can be named in app (well mine do) and turn on / off separately. Nothing is shared unless you use a google home / alexa command to turn them off as a group.

Awesome, thanks. :)

I installed both smart plugs and they work brilliantly! I installed the Tapo app and can operate the plugs from Tapo, Google Home and voice command with Google assistant. Pretty easy setup too. I've put my old remote control plug in the bin.
