Anyone played the absolute astoundingly genius hacking game uplink?

I'd just like to see if it's still widespread now, otherwise i'll give y'all a quick review. I know a lot of people on here are in the mindset of gameplay > Graphics and like a challenge, so I reckon this is right up their street. And then some.

Really?

Either way, I played Uplink a lot when it was first about, and loved it. I did suck at it though and never really got beyond having a 2 CPU computer with the fancy tracing addons. Really wanted the secure room with self destruct! :)

Yep, got it and played it to death. Once you work out how easy it is to hack the major banks, it loses its appeal quite quickly though. Still fun for wasting some time or for older systems.

I imagine it'd be a great game to play on the laptop - especially in public like in a coffee shop :D Watch peoples expressions as they look on thinking you're hacking into servers :D

Yeah, this is what I found.

There is however, a mod. It's called Onlink. If you played Uplink 'till you knew all the ins and outs, well, Onlink basically says "I see your proficiency, I laugh at your frail attempts to bypass my stuff"

Remember when you'd break the bank admin, take all the account details, and break each one for money? The details are encrypted now. Simply buying a monitor bypass isn't good enough anymore, as security levels slowly increase. Managing RAM, Bandwidth on top of CPU power and HDD capacity, multiple gateways, you name it. With the next release there's a whole new storyline, plus multiple parallel smaller storylines, new security systems, the ability to make simple C++ viruses (No programming knowledge necessary)...tones of stuff. I've barely stopped playing.

I really like it. Still can't for the love of god though hack LAN's :p

When i first heard about it I dl'ed it illegally. Then a couple of years later steam released it and quite cheaply as well, so I threw some money the producers way :)

I played it ages ago and found it a bit too easy, like if you play it mission by mission it could be hard, but take up tons of missions at the same time and the money you initialy get from that will be enough to buy decent parts, enough to easily do all them missions, rince and repeat a couple times and you will have the best equipment.

There were a few things that annoyed my slightly too, like not being able to copy and past IP addresses, typing them manualy at times was annoying. All in all it was a fun game, and a nice attempt at a 'hacker' game, would have been nice to be a bit more realistic, but i guess it had to try and appeal to a wider range of people.

It is a genius game that I am glad I took a look at. Thankfully they didn't try to make it realistic as that would have ruined the fun aspect of the game. If anyone wants realism, try to crack the game bibles ;)

Wow, I didn't know so many people had even tried it...

When the new release of Onlink is out i'll link it up here. It doesn't matter if you don't have uplink anymore because Onlink's source code is changed or something; what it amounts to is you can legally download and run Onlink with all it's stuff.

Now I must say this is a game i'd completely forgotten about, I might have to install it on this system for a laugh.

omg, i remember this game, it occupied so much of my time during GCSE's :P

i'll be going home next week, going to try dig it out and reinstall :D

yep loved it when i figured hacking banks (didn;t know about the monitor bypass trick) so had lots of peices of paper with ip's and bank accounts on and was having to do it in under a minute + log deletion :D

Monitor bypass? WTF is that meant to be? I assume it's something to mask what's being shown on the monitor client side (victim side).

I heard of this year's ago in PC Gamer when i was a complete gaming addict, but then games were a bit more exciting. Though there's only so much new and original stuff you can do, same with films and music, majority has been done and redone.

Got great reviews though, 89% PC Gamer gave it i think, made by a tiny company/hobbiest. Thought dangerous for me, i'll start getting into the hacking malarkey again and try getting into servers using telnet lol.

Yep, played and completed :)

Got to the stage where hacking a bank and stealing millions took a few seconds :p

Brilliant game.

Aha. Basically in Vanilla Uplink there are three security systems (I think, I only play onlink now which has 6), and Monitor is simply that; it monitors what you do on the server and if you try and access somewhere your IP shouldn't, it'll start to trace you. Therefore you'd need to bypass it in order to get enough time in certain servers.
