Uploading/Installing phpbb onto my webspace.

Help!

I've worked in IT for 15 years but never really done anything with the web. I'm trying to learn about websites/hosting etc and wanted to start by uploading and installing phpbb. My host has mysql 5.0.22 loaded and a database has been created. I've uploaded phpbb v3.0.0.

This is where my problems start. I can't browse (via IE) the folder containing the install.php file. I'm guessing its a permissions problem as I get 'page cannot be displayed'

What I'm I doing wrong?

are you using capital letters etc in the file path? The only permissions you should change is config.php I think this is to 777

I matched the case (lower)

I've changed the permissions of config.php to 777

Its like it can't see the files or they don't exist!

have you checked the name of install.php is actually that? Sometimes they add to the extension for the upload then ask you to change it

Have you double and triple checked you're pointing your browser to the correct location? Don't try and point it to a specific file, just point it to your phpBB3 folder.

The install file is called install_install.php

I've tried pointing it at all the folders from root upwards.

the phpbb3 directory should be wwwforumname.co.uk/forum

I may start from scratch again!

So that means all phpbb files and folders are in a folder on your webspace called 'forum'

Not sure about PHPbb but VB doesn't keeps its install file in the root phpbb folder

With VB you'd go http://www.mydomain.com/forum/install/install.php

With phpBB he should be fine visiting the forums root directory. It's probably a permissions thing.

Try installing SMF instead. If you have the same problem then at least you will know it's not something specific to phpBB. And SMF is a much better board anyway.

Thanks for all the help guys. I've tried changing permissions etc and the SMF forum but its still playing up. I've asked a friend to have a look for me. I'll report back on what he finds.
